I found this tape is almost a dead ringer for the tamiya yellow tape.  I use it to mask all my canopies now and tape everything else,  never pulled up paint either.  about $6 a roll and you get 120 feet!

where do you buy it?

I can only find it for ten dollars at lowes and ace.

I got mine at Walmart not too long ago for less than $10.

Sure Tape at Sherwin Williams seems to be like Tamiya tape also.

Ditto on Eduard or Montex pre cut masks. They will save you a ton of work and well worth every penny.

Menards and home depot,  wal-mart used to carry it but I can only find the green frog tape.  I'm not real position on the price I quoted but I know for the standard 3/4 inch it's like $7.

I second (third, fourth?) the Eduard masks, worth every penny. Bare Metal Foil https://www.bare-metal.com/bare-metal-foil.html also works great for masking canopies. I use it more often than Tamiya tape.

I'd have to third or forth the masking set process.  There will be kits you can't get pre cut mask sets for (and you will need some Tamiya tape then...buy different sizes too)....but if you can get one...GET IT!  It will save you a massive amount of time and stress.  LOL!

The eduard canopy masks are great.  When I can't find them, I too use tamiya tape and a brand new exacto blade to trim.

Thanks,

John

I second that to buy Eduard canopy masks. You can find them in any hobby online store such as Squadron, Sprue Brothers, etc...

You will find them much easier to use than masking your own using Tamiya tape. Whatever you do, DO NOT use scotch tape!!!!!!!!!!!

Tamiya tape is the best for canopies.  It has a gentler tack than standard masking tape.  It's easier on your finish.

You can see where to cut the tape by shining a brought light through the canopy.  Someone on FB posted a picture of their canopy with tape applied, and you could see the frame perfectly with the light of an LED shining through it.  The canopy was resting on an LED light like this.

If there is an Eduard mask set for your particular kit, I recommend them highly. They make the process much easier. If you're going to use tape, get Tamiya tape. It's extremely good tape. Use a brand new blade in your knife.

There's a short tutorial article in the How-to section of the FSM website. If you use tape, get some Tamiya brand from your hobby shop or Hobby Lobby. Painter's tape is way too thick.

Masking Canopies?
Posted by JJFlyer on Thursday, June 7, 2018 4:26 PM

Hello,

I have been working on an SBD Dauntless for a while now and it's time to airbrush. Any ideas on how to mask the canopy? I have scotch tape and painter's tape for household use.

Thanks,

Jamie
