Has your favorite subject been kitted satisfactorily in your opinion?
Posted by VA Spartan on Wednesday, July 11, 2018 4:27 PM

Greetings.  I was looking at my stash and got to thinking, is there anything I am really missing or would buy in a instant.  Mostly no.  My preferred scale is 1/48th.  My three favorite aircraft subjects are:

  • Vought SB2U (kitted by Accurate Miniatures, Azur, Academy) - great kit
  • Curtiss SB2C (kitted by Pro Modeller, Accurate Miniatures, Revell) - great kit
  • Sukhoi Su-7 (kitted OEZ, Eduard, KP) - Mostly a great kit.  The original OEZ kit, while basic, comes up to par in the Eduard and KP boxings with their aftermarket goodies.

Is your favorite subject missing such that you would need to snap it up in an instant if it was released in your preferred scale?

Cheers

I would scarf up a pair of RF4-C's in 1/48 and 1/32 in a heartbeat if offered in something close to the detail of the 1/32 Tamiya F4-C/D.  Could be pursuaded to get the RF and E if they ever come out in a nicely detailed 1/24, even though it would be a monster.

Already have Revell's RF, E and G in 1/32, but they are found wanting in a few places.

“Snap up in an instant” all depends upon the price. If too expensive, I’ll pass. I have enough models in my stash to last me the rest of my days and then some.

That being said, if a 1/48 B-26K, F-82G, or AH-1G came out as new tool kits by Revell or Airfix, I’d be most tempted. Anybody else, and they will likely be out of my budget. Same goes for a 1/48 C-119, CG-4A, or A.S. 51.

Trumpeter has come out with some kits that I would love to have, because they fill gaps in my collection. But they are out of my price range unless I find them secondhand.

Hi,

Modt planes that I have been interested seem to exist in some scale or another, so I'm happy there.  As for ships, lately I've been snapping up any merchant vessels I can find, and as long as I can find a representative type vessel (like a typical containership, Roll On Roll Off vessel, passenger ship or general cargo ship) I'm happy, I'm not really looking for any specific individual ship.

Though, when it comes to cars, I wouldn't mind having an example of some of the real cars I've owned.  Moebious reccently put out a 2-door 1965 Plymouth Belvedere that is close enough to the 4-door that I had to make me happy and I also have a model of the European Spec Fiat 500 that is close enough to the US spec one that I owned, but I wouldn't mind also seeing a 1978(?) Ford Fiesta, a 1988 Mazda 323, a 1993 Plymouth Sundance, a 2000 Mazda Protege, a 2001 Hyundai Accent Hatchback, a 2005(?) Toyota Matrix, a 2017 Chevy Spark, or a 1951 Buick Special.

I once had a chance to pick up a resin 1951 Buick special body on ebay but let it slip away and haven't seen another since Sad

Additionally, on a more off hand note, I also would love to see something like a cut-away view of a ship's gun or missile launcher and/or maybe even a ship's engine room, because it would be interesting to see the complexity of those systems, but that would probably be asking alot.Stick out tongue

Well, you could look for those old Revell sub kits. They made a cut away hull Type VII U-Boat, and a Polaris Missile sub w/interior long ago. I think some of the new large scale U-Boat kits such as the one by Trumpeter also have interiors, but are not cut away type displays.

Sort of like those visible kits of yesteryear like V-8 engine, Apollo Capsule, or Phantom Mustang, that are no longer in vogue for modelers. Aside from a couple new tool AFV club tank kits.

As far as aircraft gpes a gppd 1/48th Kaman HH-43 Pedro {Huskie}, and in 1/72nd scale a H-3 Jolly green Giant and YO-3 Silent observation aircraft.

In vehicles, in 1/35th a M-715 Kaiser weapons truck, a late 1960s M-35 2 1/2 ton truck, and a XM-706 E II Commando Car.

I have been "Wanting" a kit of the Escort Carrier U.S.S. Bogue for many year's .

But the only kit out there is a Tamya 1/700 scale kit that just aint quite right.

It would be nice to find one in 1/350 scale.

( I "REALLY" want one in 1/144 scale !!!)

( I "REALLY, REALLY" want one in 1/72..... but that will never happen...)

Dont worry about the thumbprint, paint it Rust , and call it "Battle Damage"

Yes, for me, all armour kits in 1/35 scale that have been made.  I pretty much have all them, and they now do with the interiors.  Such fun.  I'm pretty satisfied.

My armor building is mostly limited to what I drove inthe Air Force and a few WWII German tanks, however a ship just occured to me.  What about a 1/350th carrier Wolverine from the great Lakes fleet?  I have the 1/700th kit but it would be great to have a larger size paddle wheel carrier.

Now if somebody ever will do a 1/35 injection molded M4 DD tank, preferable the big hatch M4A1, I’ll snatch that up...

My 2 favorite subjects, Ju 87's and Sd.Kfz 251 are both very well covered in my chosen scales, 1/72nd and 1/35th respectivly. But if some one were to finally bring out a Ju 87C in 72nd, i would snap up a couple in an instant.

I am a Norfolk man and i glory in being so

A British Crusader Mk II/III in 1/35. Italeri is the only game in town and the molds are well over 30-40 years old. A decent kit, but the tracks suck and it lacks some fine details. I'd scoop one up from Tamiya or any of the newer manufactors.

One of my favorite genres is commercial aviation.

The DC-3 has so-so kits.  I really would like to see a really good kit in 1:72 however.

But the subject that definitely needs a good kit is the Ford Trimotor.  I know of only two kits, the RM 1:77 scale, and the Airfix.  The scale of the RM kit is enough off that aftermarket does not work well, and the engines in the kit are not very good.  The Airfix kit is not that great either.  The complex struts for mounting the nacelles are wrong lengths.  As supplied the engines would point in weird directions!

Vietnam brown water navy craft. I've built several of the Tamiya pbrs they are excellent kits. I would really like to see a zippo in 1/35th the only one out there is resin and I can't justify the high price for it when alot of the reviews I've read have mentioned extremely warped parts. Also would like to see a new tooled 1/35th loache

In the late 60s Monogram came out with a series of models about Vietnam.  Two of these were brown water boats:

The Swift has come out a cople times, but not having any kind of detail information I never built one since the original release.  The other one I never saw again.

I'm partial to trainers and 1/48 scale. I haven't seen much of a variety in available trainers since I've gotten back into the hobby. I have a T-6 and a Stearman on the shelf and in my stash. I picked a couple of old Hawk PT-20 kits at a show recently. I'll finish one as a polished bare metal ST-A and the other will be modified to a Kinner powered PT-22 with the Lone Star Models resin conversion. Back in 1975, a PT-22 was my first warbird ride. What I'd really like to see in 1/48 scale is a good BT-13/15 Valiant and a Fairchild PT-19, maybe with a canopy mod to make it a Canadian PT-26. But definitely some more really nice 1/48 scale trainers are in order.

OK. In the stash: Way too much to build in one lifetime...

I'd like to see more large scale modern subs.  We've had a good run of WWII subs in the 3' and up size range, why not modern subs too?

In the Sci Fi realm, I'd like to see some decently sized star ship models from The Expanse.  Maybe that will happen eventually.

Overall I've been pretty impressed with the variety of Star Trek and even Star Wars kits.  I would really like to see a larger 1701-D Enterprise, something comparable to the 1701-A 1/350 kits.

DD Sherman’s were used for the Normandy landings at all five beaches, Southern France, and Monty’s Rhine crossing at Wesel. More than just a single days use. If you combine all the battalions that used them, it would equal at least the tank portion of any armored division. That’s a rather significant number. More than many panzer types that we see in multiple kits.

Hi,

Although I've never seen that show I wouldn't mind seeing some additional sci fi kits beyond the kits that you typically see alot of (like Ster Wars, Star Trek, Battle Star Galactica, Babylon 5, Starship Yamato, or Aliens, etc).Smile

PS.  I've also been real temtped by the visible Space Shuttle kit, but its just too expensive for me right now

You're right, I just checked.  They also came out with two hueys.  They were the same model except one was armed with twin 60s on each side and the other was a medivac ship.  The "hog" version came out a few years or so later as did their 1/32nd scale huey.

There was also a 1/72nd AH-1 kit with two Cobras that coiuld be mounted on a clear stand together.

My favorite armor subject is the good old King Tiger and my favorite aircraft is the Fw 190 D-9.

Thankfully, both are very well represented in all major scales, especially the King Tiger with all the kits that got released in the last couple of years.

I wouldn't mind an injection molded Fw 190 D-13 in 1/32 however.

Yes,  I alluded to Crossings by Monty in my short post.   It's a nice selection and if any one does it I'll get one.  I get every thing.  You should see my collection of over 2000 unbuilt and 500+ built kits.  A lot have been sold or given away.   I got lots of resin conversion kits as well.  I've ben doing models for over 50 years, l have tons of references and I've done all types of aircraft and Ships and all sorts of real and Sci-fi spacecraft.  Except for cars (which I used to build back in the 60's), I will build Every Thing.  I am very happy with this hobby and where I am in it.  Heck I'm building Revells 1958 model of the USS Arizona OTB for fun right now, my second one (first done sometime in the mid 1960s) and just finished the Tacom M31 ARV and the Miniart Pzfpfw III Aust C.Stick out tongue

I got both of Tacom BergePanthers coming soon.  WooopieeL  Even the new Tamia Stuart.

I have boxes of junk kits as well.  Well sort of junky.Tongue Tied

If you have not built one of the newer 1:48 Stearman kits, it is a great kit.  I and several of my friends have built several (there is a civil, aerobatic version with Wasp engine).  I hope the kit in your stash is the new one- you will really enjoy building it.  Super-detailed.

I too would like to see a 1:48 BT-13.  I did do a 1:72 kit a year ago- I think it was either an A-Model or AZ kit.  It was a nice kit too, but a bit small to see.

Don, the Stearman kit is the Revell kit. The instructions are copyrighted 2014. I guess it's the same kit as the Army PT-17 I have on the shelf right now. The T-6 is the old Monogram kit with all of its raised detail. It will eventually replace the LT-6G that's on the shelf right now. That kit went together so badly and the finished paint is less than attractive so I just want to replace it. I saw a nice T-6 kit at a model show recently that I should have bought. I think it was a Portuguese made kit. Nice detail and a nice decal sheet. I just couldn't convince myself to part with the twenty smackers to bring it home.
