I past a store in North Brunswick yesterday so I stopped and took a look.  They had one Hobby Boss  UH-1C on clearance at $6.24 and a few cars.  Passed on them cause its not my thing.

Wow...I wish I could find Huey for that price. That's a nice kit.

Next thing you know, Atlantis kits will take over....

Well those are mostly old Revell, Renwall, Monogram, and Aurora kits. Perfect for getting youngsters into this hobby, and what many folks here cut their modeling teeth on.

Hi;

Our Hobby Lobby here in New Braunfels is doing pretty good. Airfix and Armor is great. Planes are good. The Ships are left wanting with the usual Titanics andlsrge carriers in 1/700 scale . Armor looks decent and Airfix is there with the Quick-Bilds and Glue kits .

Tamiya and the rest are underrepresented as usual. The last time I was there Model Master was low to Non-Existant. Acrylics in most brands out the wazoo. I still hate the stuff. You shouldn't have to thin to brush and brush coverage is for crap.

But, The environmentalists have struck hard on the paint industry and Rustoleum ( Model Master/Testor's) new owners are letting the product line hopefully die. Why? Who Knows ?

I will buy Nail Polish and Auto paint before I use any Acrylics on Autos, Ships and Planes. Again ,brushability is the reason. One bottle ( Large) of Modelmaster Haze Grey Thinned for a 1/200 scale model will paint the whole thing in a good cover coat with minimal to no brushmarks . That's what I expect.

Hobby Lobby's craft paint line Brushes okay, But,You need very good quality brushes. Not the usual run of the mill general purpose type. I am talking Artist quality here ( Oil ). Like Sable or Mink hair .

They only had half of the usual line of cars. A lot of empty space .

Still better than North Raleigh's Hobby Lobby...

I'm gonna have to post a picture of the Model "section" next time I go for some Tamiya Extra Thin, which is just about the only useful thing there.

Stoped at a HL on my way home and the only aircraft they had were the same old Revell/Monogram kits.

Mine also has Hobby Boss and some of the Meng toon type planes. Also some Lindberg junk. They used to carry Tamiya planes, and still may, but I didn't notice any.

Howdy, Stik. Pretty much all the good shops, especially the HobbyTownUSA stores, have closed in North Carolina. Five HobbyTowns have closed since I moved to the area in 2013. Fayetteville, NC (being former Army, I'm SURE you're familiar with that town!!) has a couple of good privately-owned hobby shops (as mentioned earlier, and I've been to both numerous times), but, unfortunately, they're the exceptions now, and not the rule, as it used to be.

If you live near Fayetteville N.C. check out the Hobbit. This place has been open for around 40? years. It's just a little hole in the wall that has about ANYTHING you could ever want.

Visit them here:

That's amusing-we had a similarly-named store up here, in Bucks County, called the Hobbit Hole.  But it wasn't a hobby shop.  It was a head shop.

I’ve only been to Military Hobbies once, and it was alright. The selection was a little more limited than some other shops. Also, the guy working there told me that they don’t carry Tamiya, which surprised me.

Military Hobbies and Tamiya used to be close back in the day. A former owner was an IPMS/USA officer, and Tamiya USA would come by occasionally. But they had some sort of fall out over pricing and inventory going to certain other shops first, so MH sold off all their Tamiya inventory on clearance, and will not carry anymore. Yes, they have a different selection than other shops. They are the only shop in the area that carries the MRP (Mister Paint) paint line in the area. And they don’t have all the gamer stuff or pre built/painted collector stuff that takes up about 1/3 of Brookhurst’s inventory space.

Yessir! Where is Tony’s? That’s one that I’m not familiar with?

If you’re still in So Cal, I suggest that you also check out Military Hobbies in Orange.

Tony’s is in Baldwin Park, it‘s a good shop. The model section is not quite as good as Pegasus or Brookhurst, IMO, but it’s still good. If you’re into Hasegawa, it’s the place to go. They don’t seem to carry Eduard or many of the new Airfix kits, but otherwise they are good.

As small as Ireland is it still takes over two hours to get to Cork to my nearest model shop Mark's Models. We pass by Toy soldiers a little of the beaten track was worth popping in one year with my son as they were hosting an international display of the Battle of Waterloo all made from lead. Toy soldiers sell the moulds couldn't resist a viking archer still untouched in the stash waiting for my now thirteen year old to take an interest apparently it takes too long.

There's one train store and a few R/C shops.

I heard there was a really good store in Fayetteville called Hayes Hobby, but that's almost an hour and a half, one way.   However, I used to drive just about that every so often to get to brookhurst hobbies when I lived in LA

I didn’t realize how lucky I was to live within easy driving distance of three good hobby shops in So Cal (Pegasus, Brookhurst, Tony’s) until I had to spend three years away.

Well-stocked hobby shops are an endangered species these days.

Roald,

I used to live just south of Hollywood, I took a job in Raleigh to move back closer to home.  Having those awesome shops so close spoiled me, too.

If you ever get a chance, Burbank house of hobbies is good and the dudes who work there are awesome.

I was able to buy the Hobby Boss M4A3(76) and Korean War era M4A3E8 for under $7 each (6 and change I think). Lot of other kits at massive discounts too.

My local Hobby Lobby just put a bunch of kits on clearance, which might mean that they’re getting ready for new inventory.

I was able to pick up an Academy F-4, and Hobby Boss UH60, Huey, and F-5 all for between $3.99 and $9.99.

I agree with some of the above posts that HL is certainly not my first choice for finding kits, BUT scoring the occasional cool model either on clearance or for 40% is fine with me.

I tend to pick up the majority of my kits on sale or secondhand nowadays.

The secondhand stores are where you will find that "One Gem" of a kit. Something from the good old days. AMT, UPC, Revell and Monogram

If you are relying on any of these big chain stores for your kits, you are in trouble.

Im sure not. I’m like GM, and have the “stash for life”. But occasionally HL gets in a kit that I want, and with the 40% off coupon, those bargains are hard to pass up. I tend to pick up the majority of my kits on sale or secondhand nowadays.
