All I know is that I purchased a WWII German ship made by Academy and the Kriegmarine flags were delete of the 'full' swastikas on their flags. When I ordered aftermarket flags, the ad showed full swastikad Kriegsmarine flags and when I received them, they were not. False advertising? I'll work around this dilemna somehow.

If its 350 scale AMP sell very nice fabric ones.

Thanks Bish

Right, but I don't think that's the point. Having the right to do so is, we do. That right is somewhat restricted in other places, although not really, and for reasons best left to those locations.

I don't model subjects where that might be an issue for my own reasons. I did one, in order to sort of blow out the stops and be as overt about the politics of the thing.

Then done with it.

Modeling is an excuse to buy books.

...Tis a shame , But the Mayans , Toltecs and Aztecs and  Anasazi didn't see it the way it was used . Nor did many others . So It is a Moot point for me .

My dad tells a story of his grandfather, at the outbreak of WWII cutting those symbols made of brass on a native American stylized chest into small crosses.

I fully understand (and absolutely abhor what it represents to hate groups), but would put one on a model for accuracy.

Law doesn't apply to the UK...

Law doesn't apply in the US either, but TB seems to have had issues, and the law would not stop someone complaining.

Exactly.  I'm curious to hear more about TankerBuilder's story, especially if he is talking about a show here in the US.  I can certainly imagine that a visitor to a show might complain, but I can't imagine that another modeler, a judge, or a club official-in short, anyone who ordinarily participates in shows where historical models are presented, would complain, let alone that an entry would be barred from participating.

Yeah, but somehow I can't imagine it becoming an issue in Israel.

Anyhow, I find this whole thing a straw dog, as there's not a marking I can think of that is easier to recreate, except maybe the Hinomaru.

There was a FSM cover some years back showing a 109 being airbrushed, Aaron's hand with A/B hovering over the tail.

I agree, there are plenty of kits that have them included, even if they are in 2 parts. And personally, i have enough AM ones to last me a life time. And given the difference between a computer game and a model kit which may well be seen my the public, who of course have to be protected from such things, i am not sure that will change any time soon.

Never had a problem at a show since lets face it 70% or more of aircraft and armour is axis power in this hobby. Now did have someone at the LHS try to break a display case that the owner showcases finished builds of his and his customers because she was offended by said marking

Germany has their reasons, to be respected.

Oddly enough, same law doesn't apply in Isreal.

In the UK i have never heard a single word said against Swastikas on models. I have taken models to shows and often display more than just a swastika on the tails of a few aircraf kits. I think most people are grown up enough.

At various times over the years I have entered several planes including the Ju87G1, Me163B-1a and Me328 V2, and others without anything being said. Those 3 in particular have won awards at shows. If there was a problem, nothing was said to me about it.

Wow, TB!  May I ask, was that here in the US?

Hi;

Since I was banned in a show with a ship entry , I do NOT put them on any Model . I use the BalkenKrause . instead . There is a long story here I won't go into . Suffice it to say , Historical accuracy is okay . Some find it offensive . I didn't till then .

The Swastika , although a Religious symbol before they got it , it still rankles , now that I give it some thought . There are NONE of my forebearers here because of the behavior of those under it . I am by the way NOT Jewish , But I now understand the below the skin level ,  of hatred of the symbol .

Tis a shame , But the Mayans , Toltecs and Aztecs and  Anasazi didn't see it the way it was used . Nor did many others . So It is a Moot point for me .

...Here is hoping that we can finally get a complete set of markings with our Luftwaffe kits!...

This change to the German federal code will have no impact on model companies excluding swastikas from decal sheets.  It's a very precisely defined law, and as others have pointed out, there are other countries that have bans on displaying Nazi emblems.  And as GM noted, there's never been any problem getting the necessary markings after-market.

That is good news though to be honest i don't find it much of an issue at the minute anyway. At lot of kits, especially those from Aisa, include them anyway. And Germany is not the only country where it is banned, so i would noit expect them to be included in those kits which don't have them any time soon.

Swastikas coming back?

I just read a news item from Time stating that Germany will relax itsban on Nazi symbols in the video gaming arena so long as they are used for "historical accuracy". Here is hoping that we can finally get a complete set of markings with our Luftwaffe kits!
