I am going to be doing a model and have questions about how to achieve a metallic finish on my model. The base colors of the model are essentially the colors I want, and I want to avoid repainting a grey model with a grey metallic paint.
Does anyone know of a way I can achieve the look I want without having to repaint the entire model?
Thanks!
Tojo72No other option can't change a plain paint finish into a metallic finish, you would need to repaint it.
What he said. There’s really no such thing as a metallic clearcoat per say that you may have been hoping for.
Ditto.

I keep hitting "escape", but I'm still here.
You could try a gloss coat or a semi-gloss coat to simulate the bare metal.

That won't work. He's not looking to simulate bare metal. He's trying to similate a metallic look of the grey color.
White, I'm not sure I understand. Either way, you're going to be recoating the model if you want to get a metallic look, so you will be painting whatever you do. Might as well use a grey metallic paint. Barrett

I guess the OP got the answer he didn't want to hear. Who knows...
Sorry, I had a busy weekend. Here's what I am trying to do (sorry for not providing enough details initially). I want to buy this model :

(sorry for the Facebook link, but it's the only unpainted picture of the model I can find)
But I want the finished product to look like this :

The main thing I wanted to know was if I could buy a clear coat/top coat to get the metallic coat or if I had to buy each individual color. From what everyone's saying I will have to buy the individual colors.
Thanks for the info!
Oh, ok.
Hey, White. That's helpful. So, you could get the shiny appearance if you just used a glossy clear coat, but it wouldn't create that metal look like you see on the finished model in the picture. You would just have a glossy looking grey. To get the look you want, you'll need to use an airbrush and spray on some paint. You could do it by hand if you add some leveling solution to the paint to help it smooth out before it dries. Someone else here may have a better idea of the color they used. It's hard to tell online, but it looks like maybe they used aluminum color on the finished model. It seems too dark to be silver color. I don't think you really want a metallic paint. The picture doesn't appear to have the reflective flecks that you would get in what is typically called a metallic color. I think you're probably trying to find the easiest way to get the job done and are hoping you can just apply a clear coat so you don't have to do a bunch of masking or take the model apart. But I don't think you're going to get the look you want if you just spray on a clear coat. I hope this is helpful and not discouraging. My son paints his Warhammer models and they look really good. Best of luck. Barrett
