You can get the slotted shelf rails and brackets at most any big box home improvement store in black, white, bronze.  Shelf brackets come in various lengths for different width shelving.  Can use prefinished shelf boards or cut your own.  Could also use a "flatpack", assemble yourself bookcase if you have the room.

I used shelf ledges from Menard's. Problem I had was they only had white color. But, you screw the ledge to the wall then hang a shelf in the ledge then screw it in place. I'll get you some pictures in a few.

These are the shelves I put up in my son's room. They are quite nice, and you don't have to worry about a standard bracket getting in the way, or being unsightly. 

i use those rails & brackets for my hundreds of books & for my ships from 1/144 scale down to 1/700 scale. the rails & brackets are black & the shelves are cut from 1/2" good 1 side plywood but not painted.

Thanks for the good ideas guys.  Bruce, the shelves in your pictures looks great.  I think something like that is what I need.

My problem is that I have a LOT of bookshelves, but they're all full of books, with books stacked up on top.  Most of the flat surfaces in my house are either covered with books, or antique clocks.  And now... models.  hahaha...
So yeah, now I need to start adding more surfaces to the walls.  That seems like the best solution.  (the non-hoarding part of my brain is yelling "OR, you could get rid of some of the books and clocks!")

I did this last summer.  Pipe fittings and lumber from Lowes... maybe should have done 4 shelves.  My wife distressed the shelves for that overal rustic look

If you got cats, shelvings are what they like to go up in. Curio cabinets are a great bet - IF... you can find one used.

Or get rid of the damn books. LOLOLOLOL!!!!

The slotted rails and brackets is what I'm going to do in the near future. You can also try auction houses I got two display cases that came out of a Kohls the pair for $50.

If anyone is interested in them I'm giving them away free to a good home. Just have to pick them up. They was lit at one time but when I got them the wire had been removed I never got around to hooking them back up. Also has the brackets for glass shelfs but agian I don't have them either but any glass shop should be able to make you some.

You could always buy a bigger house, problem solved.

Get an Anti-aircraft cat. Just turn it loose, go to bed and voila, in the morning, like magic your table will be clear for more models!

Also good at removing Christmas tree ornaments.
