Modeling groups on Facebook

Not huge on social media but I do belong to mediocre modelers and 1/35 tanks on Facebook. Lately it seems there's been a lot of drama on both of them for some reason. I know on here there was trouble in the past but lately it's been pretty ugly for some reason.

I wasn't going to jump in here, but, I will say it, I like Facebook. All my family live in another state, and it allows me to stay up to date with all the family happenings.

I haven't been or seen any of the modeling groups on facebook, but, I may check them out, for the fact that Rob mentioned. Most of my family and friends haven't seen many of my completed builds.

I'm on Scale Model Graveyard too, I swear my stash has doubled since joining that one.  I'm also a member on a few other pages.  I share my builds, and always get great feedback from everyone. 

 

 

 

 

I agree, feedback is much better on a Facebook page than on a model forum. I've also had Facebook friends who are not modelers comment on some of my builds. If I only posted on a model site, they would never see them. Also, on Facebook, there is no need for a third party image hosting site. Snap a picture with your cellphone and share to your group or groups.

 

It is.  Most of my friends and family could care less that I build, but that's okay.  I had an awesome response with my Mini Whiskey 7 build.  I couldn't believe the amount of people that liked it, and all the comments were great.  I felt like a million bucks, lol.

I have actually found the opposite to be true. On facebook one usually uses their real name so there is more accountability to ones posts as opposed to the anonymity of a forum or message board. If a person has an ego or is an all around grade A you know what then facebook or a forum isn’t going to change that.. you are what you are. Like everything in life you take the good with the bad. 

 

 

If I might add to that some.. there is a LOT of attitude, even more than forums on many FB sites - but those are mostly lowest common denominator sites or news sites.

Closed groups are an entirely different world :)

Most closed groups I'm in are quite friendly and helpful. I'm no big Facebook junky either and I don't trust them any more than I could throw the Titanic, but that just means you don't post 'real' information. Facebook doesn't have my right birthdate, no phone number, and even the city I list is a 'general reference' to the Metro area.

I live about an hour away from work. I know by facebook only, a few of my coworkers who live in my area, both on first shift and second shift. Today, on my way to work, there was a massive wreck on the southbound side of the interstate as I headed north. Traffic was at a standstill for about 5 miles.

I used talk to text to post a warning on our employee Facebook page to the first shifters leaving work and heading home. I got a couple of thanks from fellow employees who used a different route home to avoid the accident between the two mile markers.

It's not the first time I've done this, and it is usually acknowledged and appreciated.

I pretty much learned all I needed about modeling 30+ years ago from various magazines and IPMS members and books (thanks Shep).  I go on line all the time, but I don't use it as a teaching aide at all.  It's fun to look at.

I'm not into social media so I don't have Facebook or any of the others. I belong to this forum and Scalemates. I know it's better to "network" different sites, but I like staying primarily on one site for the most part. That way I can really get to know all the active members, and all of their tips and techniques.

I belong to several:  Scale Modeling Tips, Tricks, and Advice; Hobby Link International; Revell VINTAGE Models-Authentic Kits; Monogram Models Clubhouse; Lindberg Model Kit Group; Kow Yokoyama Group and MaK-North America (specific to Maschinen Krieger subjects); The Tank Crew; Kingdom Builders; Agape Modelers; Lehigh Valley Scale Modelers (my club's group).  And that's just a small, small selection of what's available.

If you do a search on "scale modeling" on Facebook, you'll find a lot more.

I belong to several aircraft specific FB groups and all have the same thing in common as the forums here, a love of building models. And the Navy and Marine groups are a great source of Naval aircraft pics for references.

I belong to probably about a dozen model related facebook pages. One is scale modeling graveyard where folks can buy, sell and trade. AMPS and IPMS both have pages as does my local IPMS club which we use to communicate with one another.

Others I belong to are for Sherman tank modeling, science fiction modeling, my old AMPS club from Mass. Vietnam Armor modeling, Cold War Armor modeling, Pacific War Armor modeling, and many other model related reference pages.

I joined a San Diego IPMS club's page so I could put them in contact with one person here that needed to get rid of a model collection. They were very helpful for that person and models got to modelers instead of being sent to the landfill.

Saying facebook is bad or evil is like saying guns are bad or evil. You can block anyone on facebook from ever seeing what you post or keep your stuff unseen from people you don't know or don't want to interact with.

I follow a couple manufacturers and AMMO by Mig.  Fantastic posts from modelers all over the world.  Really talented.

I'm not on it , but I've heard andy's hobby headquarter's isn't bad .

 I despise that site so I don't know of any myself. Be best to find a good forum to keep them going while they're still in vogue.
