Hi Ya'll ;
I have read a lot of comments about these things in these forums . Frankly , my dear I do give a darn ! Modeling is being challenged by many outside things . This is true beyond a doubt . How do we turn this around ? Well , there are many factors at play here .
Have you ,as a member of your new club or group volunteered to help set up ? This is enough to make the hardest shelled modeler to cry " Uncle" ! .Hence , some bad attitudes .Older guys seem to be of two categories here .The Grumps and the Glad to be Heres. Shoot, one more Model RailRoad show means one more year lived around my friends and family . I try to be friendly and informative . Why ? Well , how are we going to get new blood if we aren't welcoming ?
I wear two hats at every show . Well , actually three . The LEGO liason to the Model railroad club and the same to the Historical Rail Museum . Then there's my role as Vice - President for the Club in things considered models . Then as the excited 76 year old kid who can't get enough of trains , Legos and yes ,other models found at our shows .
In the last eight years of these shows I have acquired many of the hard to find ship and boat models I have been looking for . Only one from my favorite Flea Market .Trades? You can take that to the bank .
There is a member of another club that is the sourest personality I have ever run across and he looks it too ! Get him talking about American Flyer 027 guage trains though .How about a light as bright as a sun in his countenance when doing so . You Bet !
Now at the I.P.M.S. shows I've been to there is very competitive folks who actually get angry if they don't place in a class .These same folks regardless of age will not talk to you about how they did something . Almost as if they are above answering these quirys . I never understood that ! If someone asks me , Why did you choose this type of subject ? I will go into any depth they want to give a believable and truthful answer . I know many who do the same . There are , what I call snobs , but I studiously avoid them .
I enjoy talking about models of all types .Sure , I don't know beans about all the variances of a King Tiger , But , The builders eyes light up almost every time I ask questions about their model . If I volunteer to judge , I try to put myself in the builders shoes .Is It His or Her first ? If so I follow the criteria laid out in the rules for that model .
Then after judging is over I will seek out the builder and ask , Why did you do this and not that ? Then I will start a critique by saying , " Well , if I had done this I would've done it this way , What do you think ?" , That way I don't put them in the position of having to defend what they did .
For those who grump about this is wrong that is wrong , well you can only pray they didn't judge your model .Some modelers don't like judging anything but what they build . This is carried into their judging efforts, sadly . Take it on the chin and say to yourself , " Aw , Man this has been fun and a lot of folks liked what I did and Oh Boy the vendors , Whoo " . That's a successful experience , Right ?
