Negativity in the modeling community

Ya know, Tanker-Builder, I seem to recall a time when you typed your posts into incredibly long blocks of text.  It was difficult to follow your thoughts.  You've grown incredibly in your use of paragraphs to organize your ideas and make it easier for your reader.  And yes, I think you have incredibly deep and thought-provoking ideas.

Your creative spelling and nonstandard punctuation in no way detract from the communication of your ideas.  Nor do they take away from the validity of your ideas.  Much better, in my opinion, than a well crafted grammatical masterpiece that says nothing of value.

Keep at it.

      As I have explained before , I cannot see well at this tender age of 76 .This is why I space wider than normal so my eye can tell my brain the sentence is done ! Now , I post a lot , I have lived a lot .Let's have a little respect for my chops in this hobby okay ? Please refrain from being judgemental about my Punctuation .I am a two finger typist and I am still the fastest typist in this family .

 And besides no one thinks me is stoopid , just lame , so there ! TaNkEr BuIlDeR      p.s. N, Besides how did Cursive get in this conversation ? You do know that if it wasn't for cursive, criminals would be harder to stop .Anyone can PRINT as we used to call it .Now we called it " Hand Lettering " , In the design Business .But now it's become someone's signature .That's scary .Put me down for old and set in my ways .I still write letters even , and in Cursive at that !

 

I understand your use of punctuation is due to your eyesight. I do wonder about random capitalization of words, but not that that is any big deal. I've seen plenty of people on various forums these past twenty years randomly capitalize words and wonder if it was how they were taught to write or type. Just a fleeting curiousity as to why, but not anything I lose sleep over. I know the German language often capitalizes proper nouns and wonder if it carries over if someone who was German learned English later in life.

Learning differences weren't understood when we were in school, except for profound cases.

I would welcome the day when a little AI can improve communication for all, in all languages.

The rigor of spelling exercises and writing skills just humiliate people who are challenged, which in no way is a reflection of their mental abilities.

I tend to not worry too much about punctuation and such at this stage of life.  Other things are more pressing.

I was also taught cursive in second grade. We had special pens. I remember doing exercises with loops, up and down strokes. On every Friday we had a cursive test. Those were strange days.

I distinctly remember learning cursive in the second grade. I would have been 7-8 that school year, making it 1971-72 school year. I had a younger teacher, Miss Curry, and she yelled at me that my lower case "s" looked like bananas.

We did not use pens. Pens were required in junior high school, but not allowed in elementary school.

I don't remeber when we were taught cursive, but I do remeber we weren't allowed to use (or at least we were strongly discourages from using) pens until middle school.  I distinctly remember that we were given a ball point pen (and a copy of the Declaration of Independence for some reason) when we finished 5th grade

I recently herd that the scools in my distrikt are considiring to now lonnger teach speling. Does that make anie cents??? Tis is no joke. they said tat they doo not kneed to teech spelling because all cumputers hav spelcheck.

 

 

 

 

 

Lets not forget, they’re not even pushing kids to write a term paper or book report by hand and in cursive! Everything is done by Word on the computer.

 

 

I have two nieces in high school and they were never taught cursive. I think I was in second grade when we learned it.

Although, the double space at the end of a sentence has come under much debate, since the MLA came out with a new style guide that said only one space at the end of a sentence; those of us who learned on typewriters (showing my age), are used to two spaces. BUT it is incorrect to put a leading space before a punctuation mark...

 

 

 

 

If you're going to go after someone's grammatical mistakes or punctuation, it wouldn't hurt for you to proofread your rant before posting. 

It would be considered rude of me to point out that introductory clauses including a prepositional phrase are offset by a comma in APA, MLA, Chicago, UPI, AP, and standard usage forms. It would be insulting to the author to point out that a semi-colon does little to hide the sentence fragment which follows. It would also be quite unkind of me to cite those same style guides to point out that an interjection used as an introductory phrase is always followed by a comma. An editor would most likely comment that you were taught to place commas "anywhere you would pause to take a breath"; a layman would not know the difference. 

So if the practice is rude, insulting, and altogether unkind, why persist at it? This is the same behavior as counting rivets.

I had eight years of nuns in grade school. In fact, my first grade nun also taught my mother!!! Her name was Sister Mary Bibianna. There was no goofing off in her class. No talking, no wiggling around, and we only went to the toilet when she said so. Under potential physical harm we were taught correct puntuation.

One more thing, we were taught to never, ever be late for anything-- NEVER, EVER!!! To this day I still develop huge anxiety issues if I think that I will be late for anything.

 

 

 

 

Boy JK, you just refreshed my memory to 3rd grade. We had one nun teaching and a second one in the back of the classroom watching out for anyone talking. She would then strike hard and fast with no warning. We called Sister Davis “The Enforcer”.  

 

Wow,I had a couple of teachers in public school who used the ruler or threw erasers,could you imagine the outrage today ? I daresay that any of us would object to a teacher putting hands on our kids or grandkids in the same way they did to us back in the day.

It was just a totally different time.

Dude, the only negativity you'll get from me is regarding your atrocious use of punctuation! NOTE: there is NO space BEFORE a punctuation mark. After, yes, either one or two spaces; usually one, except after a colon, or after the period at the end of a sentence.
