One Less Fletcher Crewman!
Posted by Jrock83 on Tuesday, March 5, 2019 8:14 PM

This past Saturday March 2 2019, my grandpa passed away at the age of 97. He died of a hernia that blocked his bowel movement and failing kidneys. He served in the Navy on the USS Jenkins DD-447 from about 42'-45'. He survived a couple air attacks in the Pacific theatre. He was an old school guy who did everything himself and was married to my grandma for 75 years and raised 3 kids and worked at the same small company for 56 years and lived in the same 1st house he and my grandma bought in 1956. I built a 1/700 scale Fletcher class destroyer for him a few years ago and he was like a 10 year old kid at Christmas when I presented it to him. He is one of the reasons I got into modelling for the love of history and building things. He will get an honorary military burial next week at Arlington cemetery in Riverside,CA. Just thought I would share.

Sorry for your loss Jason. Glad you got to make and present the model to him before he passed. Know that he is at peace now and will rest with his fellow servicemen in a place of honor.

They're not called 'the Greatest Generation' for nothing. Condolences for your loss...and a salute of gratitude to a fine gentleman, his life and his service.

Sorry to hear that. Reminds me a lot of my uncle who served in the Navy during the Second World War on a landing craft.

Rest in Peace
