Dress Blues Done Right Jim Hudson, April Issue

I really enjoyed your recent article on the Dress Blue Uniform of the Marine Corporal in the April Issue.

However I do have a issue with the color used on the blouse. As a former Marine Staff Sergeant, the color that you used is way off. I happen to own a set and the blouse is much darker than the model. The actual color of the dress blue blouse called Midnight Blue.  The darkness of the blouse makes the red piping trim, chevrons, and hash mark ( service stripe )  pop out.

Next, the medals on the corporal should be the Navy Achievement Medal, Good Conduct Medal,National Defense Medal, Multi National Force and Observer Medal and The SouthWest Asia Service Medal in that order of seniority.  Since this is is a war time period, he would also rate any other ribbons whch would be worn above the left side pocket.( http://www.usmcmuseum.org/Medal_Chart.pdf)

Please go to the site for more information on the Dress Blue uniform: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uniforms_of_the_United_States_Marine_Corps#Blue_Dres

The trousers are the correct shade of blue and is called the Dress Blue A.

The buttons, emblem, waist plate should be brighter as most Marines replace the issue items with Anodized items which are brighter as well and don't have to be polished on a regular basis ( it's a pain to do this and you don't  have to be worrying about them tarnishing. )

The rifle is a M1 Garrand which identifies this Marine as being part of the Silent Drill Team which is based at Marine Barracks, Eigth and I , Washington DC. The bayonet should be a bright silver color as it is highly polished. This unbit is the only Marine unit that uses the M1 as part of its T.O.  MostColor guards in the Fleet use either the M-14 or the M-16-M4 service rifles. These Marines wouldbe wearing the Dress Blue A or B.

The shoes should be a glossier black most Marines wear Corfam shoes which doesn't need to be spit shined.

I'm not trying to nit pick Mr. Hudson's article and his excellent work on the Figure but he should have done a little more research on it.

I whole-heartedly agree with you, Captain Cole. When I read the article, the first thing I noticed was the color/shade of the blouse. I then deduced that the author was probably never a Marine, so I let it go at that.

Semper Fi, Marine!
