1/18 Hobby Boss Focke-Wulf 190 A8
Posted by 666Irish on Friday, April 5, 2019 4:20 PM

First time posting here in a VERY long time.

I recently picked up the Monster sized Hobby Boss Focke Wulf 190 A8 in 1/18 scale.

My question is this: Is there any aftermarket for this kit? I've been searching my brains out, but all I can find is metal landing gear.

Anyone with any experience on this kit?

She was only a whiskey maker, but he loved her still.

No, but I sure hope you post some WIP pics with size references. I've never seen a 1/18th scale model aircraft. Never knew they existed until I saw your post.

Unfortunately, no. Looks like you’re stuck with the kit’s struts. Unless you know how to make your own.

Greg, I was unaware as well. I've never built a 190, but always wanted to. Guess this is as good a place as any to start, right? Lol. I have a couple things in line ahead of it, but will post pictures soon.

I figured as much. Just wanted to see if anyone knew of anything. Even shapeways comes up dry.

Absolutely! I think FW-190's are very cool aircraft, I've built two in 1/48th. I'd think 1/18th should be a blast.

will post pictures soon.

.....

Looking forward to that! Should be some fun detail to see in that scale.

Just found out just how big this kit is going to be fully assembled.

490.5 mm L (19 1/2”)

583.5 mm wingspan (about 23”)

This is very sadly, as all Hobbyboss' 1/18 kits are, lacking in detail. You don't even get a decent engine. AM companies are not going to support stuff like this as it is not mainstream stuff.

You can see the kit contents here

http://www.hobbyboss.com/index.php?g=home&m=product&a=show&id=1404&l=en

Even Revell of Germany has better FW 190's than this with more detail in them in 1/32 and Zoukei Mura are working on their own FW 190's and with that companies record should be cracking kits.

Even HB's sister company, Trumpeter and Airfix have better 1/24 kits (especially airfix with their up and coming new Hellcat and the Typhoon).

Considering what can be done in injection molding these days and what we have seen done with the Airfix Tiffy, HB has very sadly missed the mark. Unfortunatly I regard these are large scale lemons due to the lack of detail.

Understood. For the price I paid, I wasn't expecting a super high level of detail. I build for the pleasure of it, not to make show models or museum pieces. The shape is good, and the surface detail is nice. It will look good hung on my wall, and no one will ever see it any way. Lol.

The other reason is that I am going to use it to learn to use an airbrush. I figured bigger is better for that.

A quick size comparison with a 1/48 P40 from Airfix (great little kit)!Size comparison 1/18-1/48

I really like that size comparison pic. Thanks! That thing is big, just as Sheep said.

I checked Scalemates and eBay, and nothing showed up for AM for this kit.

I have to say, good gracious, that's a big kit! I'm looking foward to seeing you build this one too!
