Hey Derek,
As well as some original stuff, I've used alotta material from books and magazines on my website. I always list the source of these images; publisher, author, photographer etc. I think as long as you credit those who are deserving of such, you should have little to no problem.
I've also used images from other websites, but in each case I have contacted the webmaster and requested permission, as a reply is usually prompt. I usually don't attempt contact with a book publisher (especially foreign ones) simply because of the time it takes to gain a response.
Again, list as much as you can about the origin of the images and you might even want to go so far as to give some sort of short (or long!) review of the source of the material. ie; "These images were taken from the book entitled "BOOK", written by Bill Wrightalot and published by "Lowe & B. Hould" publishers. Photography by Johhnie B. Goode. - This is an excellent volume dealing with a great many things and includes some stunning photography of alotta stuff. Or something like that! LOL
The worst that can happen is you'll be contacted by the publisher, author, both, the FBI, CIA, NSA, Bill Gates, Cookie Monster or all of the above with a request to remove the images from your website!
As long as credit is given, don't worry too much! It's not as if you're making money from the use of these images.
