Got my Han license about 14 years ago, after I started running r/c subs. I've been running r/c boats since 1975. All of my subs, and a few of my surface ships are on Ham r/c channels. The lower radio frequiencies work better for submerged sub models. At the sub events I go to, I'm generally the only on running on 50 MHz, so I don't have to wait for an open channel.
Would be nice to have a radio net that meets once a week to discuss modeling. No DMR here but use IRLP from time to time. Am still an active ham but not as much as in past years.
Hope you find something Dave and keep us posted. I'd like to join in if possible.

I should have mentioned, in my above post, that I got into ham radio through modeling.
I was more interested in flying models as a kid and young adult, and wanted to get into RC aircraft. In those days, Citizens Band radio only had a couple of channels designated for RC. Ham radio had room for lots of channels. I figured with a ham license I would not have to wait turns for a clear frequency.
I figured I could pass a ham radio exam, so I learned code and got my license. Once I had it, I got interested in other aspects of ham radio.

I got up to 20 WPM as a boy. It was really fun back then, before the internet. I talked with folks from all over the world. I remember staying up til 3 am or so working the skip. My dad was an avionics guy in the airforce so we had the best heathkit had to offer and my bedroom was the shack. Really cool nerd stuff. 73s

My former callsign was YU2BHI, that was the radio club I belonged to. Thinking of getting a licence for Canada but the booklet with questions I received looked VERY intimidating
I have both HAM and CB base rigs set up, also scanners, but haven't heard any model building discussions. There are Podcasts discussing model building however.

Cadet Chuck Hi, John- I'm K9LCI- Like you, I am not active at this time, but keep renewing my license for old time's sake. 73, Chuck

Unfortunately, I let mine lapse. I know no code is required now, but I will need to bone up on regulations- bands have been changed, etc. Theory doesn't bother me. Just can't seem to get around to it.

That would be interesting. I've had my (novice) license since I was 13. Not active for decades but I do keep renewing my license and getting more and more priviledge over the years ;) WB6PJZ
Could be true! I've had my ham radio license for many decades, and had a good friend, also a radio ham, who was active in IPMS in national administration. But I have never made a direct connection between the two hobbies. Maybe the modeling hobby attracts people who are also into ham radio, because of the similar attention required for skills and detailed work.
Does anyone know of any DMR talkgroups for model building discussion? I know there are some ham radio operators here on the forum. I'm looking for discussions about model building on DMR radio. (Digital Mobile Radio). DMR has "talkgroups" sometimes dedicated to discussions of hobbies or interests. One night I listened to a Net (discussion) of amateur astronomers and it was fascinating. For some reason ham radio and astronomy attract similar people. I thought, maybe that may be true for the model building hobby. Thanks,Dave
