Pre Shading or Sludge Wash

I am ready to start experimenting with adding more detail to aircraft I build. I'm currently building a Hasegawa 1/72 F-106 Delta Dart. It has raised panel lines and rivets, I don't know if I should pre-shade, apply a sludge wash or both? Want to do what would add the greatest detail, but not ruin the model.
