Is it just me?
Posted by BrandonK on Thursday, April 2, 2020 4:52 PM

This site is getting totally overrun with ads and it's driving me nuts to try and read the forums with popups all the time and now they are intruding on the page itself. Perhaps it's just me, but it makes me not want to come around here. It's too distracting. I get it that they need revenue, but let's not get carried away. Good grief. Just my opinion, you may feel different.

I can ignore them pretty well.

It's the banner ones that jolt the topic list just as I click, so I wind up clicking the wrong spot, that make me say bad words.

I build 1/48 scale WW2 fighters.

Have fun.

I can't say I have much of a problem with them, either on my tablet or my PC.  I use an ad blocker and a script blocker on my PC.  I'll have to check other settings such as not allowing off site cookies.  Guess I'm just used to going through my settings and turning stuff off!

Hope you get things squared away!

Ublock origin or Adblock plus will remove them.

I don't trust online advertisements, even if I trust the site they're being posted on. They all use 3rd part ad providers and that leaves a huge vulnerability for viruses. I remember a few years back a major ad provider was hosting ads that used a flash exploit to install a virus on your computer.

I'm totally disgusted with computers, and the internet in general.  And it has ruined this formerly enjoyable site.

Yeah, it may be a bit of an annoyance but, it by no means takes away at all from me still enjoying the FSM forums. Still the best group of folks and quality modeling going. Certainly not going to allow something as simple as the pop ads distract from the actual enjoyment I have got here for years.

Glad to hear you got it sorted out, Brandon.

I was just going to say I use Firefox and currently use U-Block Origin as my adblocker. I've never seen an ad on this site since I joined up in 2013.

That's good, Brandon.  I currently use No-Script on my Firefox browser, which is out of date.  Big Smile

Maybe we need a thread on how to setup devices and browsers to block all those annoying ads?  Of course, I don't think FSM will be too pleased...

If you right click on the words "Not secure" and chose the cookies option, you can block the cookies for everything but the Fine Scale things. It should remove the ads.

I just installed "Adblock" as an add-on to Chrome. I opted out of the donation window.

It really does seem to be working. I will miss the girl in the "sexiest bikini", but probably not "Fran".

Adblock has a Chrome extention that is one click and done setup. The "not secure" label is located to the left of the page URL and right clicking that opens up some options. I was surprised to see several cookies not related to FSM that I also disabled. I have learned quite a bit in this short thread. Thanks everyone.

If this site was secure, I would happily add this site to my ad-blocker exception list to support FSM.

I use google on my iPhone, and can’t find where to block the adS. The settings menu does give me many options.  I tried visiting a bunch of sites today, and this is the only one that is giving me the pop ups.

Clicking once or twice doesn’t bother me, but every time I move to a new thread is beyond frustrating.  I know it’s a free site, but so are all the other ones I frequent.

Maybe if I give it a month or two, it will resolve. I just like checking in more often than that.  I really like this forum.

I tried again and it even pops up when I change pages within a thread.

Thanks for the info on the adblocker guys. I'll check it out. I thought it was just me. First they took over 1/3 of the right side of the screen squeezing the site over. Now they are taking over about 1/3 of the bottom of the screen too. I usually just ignore them but now ....... it's getting rediculous.

We have to differentiate between FSM ads and third party ones.  Also what one means by FSM ads.  Stuff that shows up if you overshoot the navigation line are not really ads.

There's a good question.

So I just turned off my adblocker temporarily to get a feel for what folks might be seeing. Along the right panel, I saw modeling related ads that I don't find intrusive at all, and maybe even interesting to me. No effect at all on site navigation or the visiblitly of the panes/panels/whatever I want to see/read.

However, I did see 3rd party ads showing up either at the top or bottom. They seem to float, and they are annoying and disruptive. So I think I get now why it's bugging some folks.

In fairness though, since I use an ad blocker regularly and for so long, I have no idea what the new "normal" of intrustiveness might be.

Although I'd kind of like to see the model-related ads, the ad blocker is back on due the the 3rd party stuff.

i still can’t figure out how to stop the pop ups, so I got some Tamiya masking tape and put it on the bottom of my phone when I’m on this site.  It doesn’t cover much of the phone , and I’m not being distracted by the changing banner.  It’s a silly fix, but works great.

Adblock really works. Installed it the other day after reading of it here, and no more ads.
