I'd paint the sails a dirty linen looking color.
Bottoms of ships wrre only copper on military and some top line commercial ships, so you can paint the bottom red, white, green.
Topsides I'd use lots of dark gray (scale black) as the easiest way for finishing would be to smear tar all over, or just let it go.

sdunc Just got back into models and have a question. I am building the Revell Pirate ship and under colors it said to use 80% of one color and 20% of another. Do you mix according to this formula or is it something else. Thanks in advance steve

Yes, 80% of color one and 20% of color two means that you mix 8 drops of one and 2 drops of two -- or 4:1 or 16:4. Volume mixes, generally not by weight
