Sir Stirling Moss was not only a legend, but also a great gentleman. Moss raced from 1948 to 1962, winning 212 of the 529 races he entered, including 16 Formula One races.  He competed in as many as 62 races in a single year and drove 84 different makes of car over the course of his racing career.

I remember seeing him on numerous occasions over the last 20 years sitting for hours signing authgraphs and talking to fans (LeMans, F1 events, Monte Carlo, Goodwood, etc.)

He also did a lot of vintage racing and was always one of the front runners to beat regardless of his age or what he was driving. I guess one of the great things they said about him was that he was always courteous, kind, a professional, and respected by his peers; a winner on and off the track.

Strange, I've never followed racing and his active years seem to have been when I was quite young, yet his name is somehow etched in my feeble memory.

Thanks for writing this.  As a F1 fanatic I was very sorry to hear about the passing of Moss.  Of Course he lived a very full life dying at 90.  He raced in an era when racers were killed seemingly every weekend.  When I first started reading about his accomplishments I was suprised he never won a drivers world championship.  He did race against Fangio, Ascari, Brabham, Hawthorn, and Graham Hill.

Want a better idea how insanely dangerous motor sports was in the 1950’s?  Google 1955 Lemans.

That rarest of thing; a sports car racing legend from the 50's- 60's who died in his bed.

Slamming the big Mercedecs 350 SLR around the Mille Miglia... we will miss you. The greatest racing driver never to win a championship.
