Tamiya X-22 with Windex over Vallejo Air
Posted by mdanfas on Friday, April 17, 2020 1:24 PM

Hello everyone..

I live in Dubai and I can't get hold of the X-20A thinner now. Can I use Windex for X-22 Tamiya clear ? The paint I'm spray Clear on is Vallejo Aqueous.. will it ruin the paint ? Does it go well?

What other alternatives are there for X-20A?

Any inputs will be helpful..

In addition to X-20A, I often use 71% or even 90% alcohol. They work perfectly OK for me, should be easily available for you in Dubai. I've never tried the Windex or any other solutions so no knowledge, but I'd only try it is as a last resort.

I agree with Patrick, Isopropyl Alcohol will work.

You have a couple problems with the Windex.

1. Windex cuts Vallejo. It is a very effective Vallejo paint stripper and airbrush cleaner. It will attack and ruin the underlying Vallejo color coat.

2. Tamiya acrylic is alcohol-based, Windex is ammonia-based. I can't imagine it working to thin Tamiya acrylic. Even if it made the Tamiya thinner, I'd think it would wreck the properties of paint that make it such a good product.

I hope you are able to find some ISO so you can move forward with your project.

Windex removes Tamiya paint. I can’t imagine that it will work with any Tamiya acrylic paint.

That being said, somebody on here mentioned recently that DryErase board cleaner is nearly dentical to Tamiya X-20A thinner and can be used as such as a replacement.
