Returning Modeler
Posted by Bullhead on Saturday, May 9, 2020 12:33 PM

Hi everyone,

I apologise in advance if I'm posting this incorrectly.

I've recently picked up modeling again after 40 years and decided that my returning model would be Tamiya's CVN 65 Enterprise. I've wanted to build this model since I was a kid but could never justify the expense, or more importantly  because I was terrible at building them back then.

From the forum. I've managed to pick up some handy information which has helped me build a reasonable model so far. However, as I'm now moving into painting, clear coat and weathering, I'm getting a little apprehensive and could do with some guidance.

So I have a few questions and I'm hoping you guys can help with.

First off. I dont own an airbrush system.  I'm using Tamiya spray and paints. For the clear coat on the hull, what would be recommended procedure? For the flight deck, after what I've read and viewed of other models, the deck appears matt, so would a matt clear coat be the choice here?

I have a MasterCraft (Canada) 8 gallon compressor which I believe can be used to airbrush with but requires a regulator that limits the psi to 20 or 30 psi?!? I read another forum entry that mentions doing this and I'd like to try this route before I go all out and buy a complete air spray system.

In terms of air brush, what would you recommend ? I've heard good things about Paasche VL but really dont know. I'm looking for a reasonably good airbrush but one that's forgiving.

Thanks everyone.

For the clearcoat,Clear coat, will you be airbrushing or using a  spray can,for airbrush, you can use Testors,Alclad,Vallejo, there are many.If you go with a can,I believe Testors has Spray cans too.

True the carrier will have a matte finish, but if you are using decals, then they need to be applied to a gloss surface for better adhesion.

Not sure about that airbrush,Google Don Wheelers airbrush site, lots of reviews and great info.

You probably need to go lower with the psi on the regulator,10 psi sometimes lower depending on what your painting.

No problem with the placement of your questions, but you should check out the different sections and try to get them in the closest match, you get more specialized answers.

Hey ,I did that kit in the 80's when it first came out, paid about $100 for it,thought that was a lot then.So post some pics in the Ship section.

Welcome to the Forums! Glad to have you with us.

You can get a regulator with a water trap to install on your compressor at any Lowes, Home Depot, or really any good hardware store for under $20. It can be installed in about 2 minutes. Your compressor is OK for spraybrushing with that.
