Tips/videos for applying Cowl Decals
Posted by RudyOnWheels on Monday, May 11, 2020 1:48 PM

Hi guys, I was wondering if anyone can point me in the direction of a good video or some tips on applying Aircraft cowl decals, such as the checkered pattern for this Academy 1/48 P-47? I failed miserably in my first attempt, the decal appeared to be In great shape but tore to shreds as I tried to apply it. Not sure if spraying some decal clear over it first might have helped, or not. I've searched pretty extensively on youtube trying to find a video for specifically these cowl decals, but come up empty handed. I know the basics, and use microscale "Micro Set" and "micro Sol".

Id appreciate any tips or insight you can give before I destroy the next set of decals I'm about to order!

thank you, Rudy

let's see if this picture link works. I got this kit as a steal at $5. All I have left to do is the decals And canopy.

The pic came through OK with the link.

Just went through the same situation. Decals on an old Revell F9F-5 Panther. Used Decal Bonder on the sheet before I started using it because of the age. Some of them came off the sheet fine and others came off in shreds. Good thing I have spares. Guess that's what I get for having so many old kits in the stash. The decals were in a plastic baggie and in a folder in the file cabinet so they were out of the light for quite a few years. I was told that was the way to protect them. But, on some it works and some it don't. That's why we have AM sheets available (sometimes).Wink

This was Tamiya's 1/48 P-47D bubble top.  The cowl decal reacted nicely to liberal and repeated application of MicroSol and poking bubbles and small creases with a brand new #11 blade.  Careful work.

Thanks,

John

That's what I have heard too Jim, keep them out of the light. Seems like some were made with more acidic (?) paper or materials that causes faster breakdown.... Some even seem to affect the others around them, much like certain types of tape in an old photo album....

kev- That looks awesome! That's what I was going for!

- thanks, -Rudy
