What happened there?

Well, it's an easy explanation. When the plastic was flowing into the mold it got slowed by a Temperature Differential in the mold walls. This allowed the plastic to gather up and get too hot. I  would recommend replacing the missile bodies with Evergreen Tube, They could be brittle

Maybe the styrene had FOD in it.

 Modeling is an excuse to buy books.

The rest of that reads- Not long ago I was about to clean these parts and I notice this dark ring.  It’s a Revell F18E kit.
