Sure glad to hear this turned out to have a happy ending.

Hobbytown USA's are generally very nice stores, IMO. You just reminded me to go buy something at our local one. I need to push self to do that more.

Is this the one on Hwy 100?  I haven't been there since covid so I'm out of the loop.  I have mail ordered from Hiawatha during the lockdown and will probably place another today.  I used to have a HobbyTown here in the Falls but that went out a couple of years ago but Hobby Lobby has started to slowly add to their modelling section, at least paints and tools.

pleased for you mate , hopefully they are closer to you .

Hey Steve. You won't believe where they moved to. They moved to a vacant store next to their original location. They barely need to move their sign. I will check the store out soon. I suspect he wanted more room to expand.

Well, a happy ending to a sad story.

In SW Florida I go to Victory Models in Ft Myers great selection, good prices, and a great paint selection. Also have 2 Hobby Lobby stores within 15 minutes

I have some good news and some bad news. The bad news is I was misinformed about the Hobby Town closing. The good news is that the store is not closed. What happened? They moved the store and today they had their reopening. It was the perfect storm of poor communication.

Well, it was a good conversation anyhow.

It happens, and corona may be the final cause of death, but in many cases it was just a last straw. There are a lot of other factors. The area I live in once comfortably supported 4-5 stores at the same time. Mostly because there were a lot of well paying industrial jobs, and the local Air Force Base. Into the 90s, there were a lot of people that were pretty well off, and could afford the hobby. And while all those airmen weren't getting rich, if you were living and eating on base and not blowing all your pay on cars, booze, or women, it was easy enough to go to the hobby shop and walk away with an armful of stuff to fill your time. Strangely enough, there were a lot of those airmen that liked plane models, for some reason...

Now, the good paying industrial jobs have disappeared, and Griffiss AFB is long closed. The local economy never recovered, and this is an economic ghetto now. A vast wasteland of chain restaurants, dollar stores, tattoo parlors, and liquor stores. Plastic models are not the only upscale luxury hobby that has suffered and disappeared; all of the scuba shops have closed up as well, for example. Want equipment, service, or training? You have to drive an hour away to Syracuse now. The demographics of the area are such now that hobbies are mostly a frivolous luxury to many that are still living here.

The last local store closed almost two years ago now. I'm surprised they made it that long, and I doubt there will be another in the time I have left. There is a Hobby Lobby, but their own kit selection has dwindled from both sides of an aisle when they opened, to less than a half of one side now. Times have changed. In many ways the hobby is having a second golden age, with the number of manufacturers, kits, and support products available. Largely though, the local store is just not part of it any more.

Hiawatha Hobbies in Waukesha is still going strong, as far as I know.  I've stopped in last weekend and did a couple online orders for pickup during the lockdown.  Their Tamiya kit prices are surprisingly competitive...even on a special order I placed.  The kit ended up being cheaper than Amazon somehow!

That is good to hear, and I hope they stay open! I know the owner. I worked with him many years ago now, before he started the hobby store. He has a nice store, well stocked. I should say, PACKED to the gills. Wink It is not as convenient for me to head out there, but options are getting slim with the exception of the Hobby Lobbys. I have one about 10 minutes drive from me but I am not too excited about them. Their offering is meager.

If you come out this way, check out Model Empire too. Their focus is cars, but they do have a smattering of military and other. They have a very good selection of paint supplies as well. This will probably become my go to place for paint and maybe some models.

The Hobbytown in Delafield went out two years ago, it was a shame to see.  It was nice having a source for supplies within a 5 minute drive.  The space in the strip mall is still vacant too.  I spoke with the owner said her business itself wasn't failing, it was just that with her kid was going off to college, hiring dependable new staff who actually showed up to work was so hard that it wasn't worth it anymore.

As stated earlier, there must be something with the Hobbytown franchise that are making all the franchisees pull the plug.  The corporate pricing structure must be very rigid, and I think they can only source inventory from corporate per the franchise agreement.

I think the last time I lived within 20 miles of an LHS was about 1995.

Its been a steady process of decline.

Like many businesses the current situation was the final thing to make a lot of business owners just retire.

I have bifurcated the hobby. I buy online and I chew the fat here. Much more intelligent conversation here.

Modeling is an excuse to buy books.

I lost the nearest LHS a decade ago.  Nearest now is about 35-40 minutes, next closest is 45.  But, I have a Hobby Lobby about two miles away and the good news it is broadening its kit selection.  Used to be almost all Revell.  Still is heavy in Revell, but adding a lot of Airfix (which I am liking more and more with their latest stuff), Academy, and Galaxy.

Also several lines of paint, including big racks of Testors which they keep full.

Sucks to lose a LHS. It seems we hear of Hobbytowns closing more often. Two have closed in Florida the past couple years.

That does seem true.

that's sad mate , the one I go to in brisbane , thrived . his only trouble was keeping supplies up . mind you he's just about the only game in town .

Yeah. This owner was doing all the right things. He was diversified in his offering. He stocked for all the hobbies, heavy in RC and models. He even rented an empty office in the back of his store where he had weekly RC races. During the summer he set up a track in the parking lot for people to race RC. His RC business was amazing. People were dropping big bucks on RC cars and equipment. He once told me he can't stock Gundam models fast enough. Very popular around here. He said people buy them by the armful.

It was shocking to see the store emptied and the lights off.

I consider it a real treat to go to my LHS.

I agree. I was looking forward to it.

In Orlando I think we're down to only one store now and Hobby Lobby.  There may be something way over on the west side of town but I aolmost never go that far out, only twice in the last 8 years or so.

Sad to hear indeed.  I consider it a real treat to go to my LHS.  Don’t even want to imagine those guys going under.

The HobbyTown near my work has closed. Covid 19 strikes again. Prior to Covid 19 it was a thriving store. I thought he'd weather the storm, sadly, not the case. Sigh.
