Does anyone else find themselves musing over the simple things we took for granted and never in a million years would have thought to be grateful for, such as being able to attend an event with other human beings?

I sure do. It's sort of mind-boggling the more you think about it.

 

 

Pretty darned normal around here. Kids back in school and the bus rumbling down the gravel road in the morning and afternoon. Going to the dentist today, no mask required. Restaurants are open with open seating and no mask requirement. Yep with the exception of Walmart and Dollar General requiring masks (businesses I will never enter again) everywhere else is business as it was before the pandemic that was not.

It is an extra year for us to get more money behind us, more time to prepare for the competitions etc.

For those who are going to organise to travel a long way it gives time for exchange rates to settle, for you to organise your purchase lists to "Must Have" and " if it is a really good price".

It also gives you the opportunity to organise travel and negotiate with Hotels. Get insurance etc. For those travelling from overseas and can travel out with hand luggage, but have checked luggage option, take a collapsable suitcase with you and put your purchases in that. That is now your checked luggage! 

For those who now intend to travel long distance to SMW at Telford, be warned. Hotels hike their prices over that weekend to what can be seen as extortion. Same for bar and food. I like in Yorkshire and take 3 trains each way for both days of the show. It is an early start and late return, but I do save at least £150-200 in hotel, food and drink.

I would take a tent and find somewhere close and quiet to pitch, but it is in November and I really am too old for that S***!

I am a Stage Hand (got my Union Card in 1997) and believe me, no one misses shows more than the folks whose lives depend on them. Our livelihoods came to an abrupt halt with the near future not looking very good at all. 
Broadway tours, rock and roll tours, movie shoots, opera, orchestra, ballet, trade shows and conventions are all GONE. I was out on tour with Phantom of the Opera for almost 2 years, years ago, and it was fun, but more importantly, a damn good living. Most folks would be shocked to know how much positive economic impact the entertainment industry has.

I used to have a pretty good social life - eating out once or twice a month, drinks with friends after work, family stuff etc. - all on hold now.  But doing without them for now means those things will return, like the shows, and club meetings, and watching sport in the pub - and more of us will be here to enjoy them.  Snapdragon is right - our hobby helps keep us safe, and sane, and -hopefully - in good humour!

Yeah;

 I used to Antique wander on Wednesday after "workday' at the Museum. No more. Stop at my favorite restaurant for Huevos Rancheros, Nope. Get Coffee at the pastry shop. Nope. Model Shows, Nope. Geez it's getting lonely out here!

You mean like having breakfast at a crowded diner or coffee shop

Browsing a store and not worrying how close the person near you is.

Watching a game and having a drink at a crowded bar

Enjoying a baseball game at a ballpark

Museums,Aquariums,State Fair,Boardwalks

Attending my place of worship in person

I used to attend audio/electronics shows. It was great fun listening to equipment that I could not afford and talking to loudspeaker designers. Oh well

 

When I saw all the trade shows that had been cancelled this year, that took the wind from my sails. I am SOO TIRED of doing trade seminars through Zoom, Youtube, or Facebook on a stupid 27" monitor and listening to muffled audio.  The hardest of all is not being able to do personal networking that you can only get at a show.

Good observation, a reminder that we all have things we enjoy that we've had to give up.

I guess it's not just me. That truly is a shame about your cancelled Nats. I got to go to one because it was within driving distance and I'm glad for it.

Now when I watch TV commercials where there are a bunch of people crowded together having a good time, it seems odd and from so long ago.

Me too! As well as TV shows and movies. I find myself thinking, 'Hey, you can't do THAT!'.

So wierd.

    I feel the same way Greg, I had hi hopes of attending my firts Nats this year, had a great job, got plane tickets, rental car, hotel....got a sniffle first psrt of March and left work, during the 2wk " quarintine the job began to crumble, first part of May I made the choice to not return to that job as it was 2hrs from home. 2wks after I resigned my position the company pull stakes and went back to Japan. So I figured "I still have Nats"  yea right that went south, no pun intended. My local model club has not met in person since February and given the average age of our members is in the high 60s..... Yes I too miss the simpler times.

The news about SMW is sad but not surprising.  My friends wanted to go some time in the near future, so hopefully things will get better sooner than later.

Sorry to hear that Snapdragon. That show is on my bucket list, but its a long way from Oz to the U.K. And besides, I would have to go with a lot of cash and credit card space for all the stuff I'd want to buy. Of course then i'd probably have to hire a container to get it all home.......... Ah, such dreams.
