ikar01

I have used all sorts of odds and ends from all types of stores for parts even the plastic cups fasst food places use for ketchup, mustard, and other condiments.  Sometimes I may see a object on the ground and I'll consider if it might be useful in my current or some future build.

I find those cups great for mixing cups  for small amounts of painting with a small brush.

I don't know how many things you will find for precison scale IPMS contests , but for flying scale I think there is a bit more leeway with accuracy.  I have known several people besides myself that have found cowls close enough for flying scale in food containers and cleaning supply caps.

Okay here's a weird one for you;

   Those of you who have built a lot of Prop driven planes are familiar with this part. Especially the radial Engined fans. In Almost 1/48 scale! I think it's only a few mms off, but not much! I had  "Butcher Bird" with a destroyed Cowling I found a replacement in the most unexpected place. The Grocery Store!

   We have in Texas, a chain called H.E.B. Supercenter markets. They have a product called Squeeze Me! It's a package of squeeze pouches of Apple Sauce and Cinnamon Apple Sauce. Well, the surprise came when My landlady first asked me " Can You Use This" And she drops an aircraft shaped cowl in my hands.

   It even has the same front inside edge as my "Butcher Bird" It has four vanes that support the center threaded section. Easy to remove. After a little thinning and adding cowl flaps it looked like it belonged! And it fit over the engine perfectly!

     So, now you have to start looking for replacemant parts in the Grocery Store? Who Woulda Thunk ?? Oh, they fit perfect on my large Paper C-47 too!
