Q: Getting rid of tobacco stench?
Posted by scaler on Thursday, May 27, 2021 7:26 PM

Purchased an older plastic kit, but the whole thing stinks of old tobacco.

Any recommended way to eliminate the odor?

Thanks! Confused

I usually take everything out of the box including the instructions and put everything in the garage for a couple days to let it air out.

My standard treatment for Ebay kit purchases.

First wash parts/sprues with Simple Green or something similar. If odor persists, put the (dried) parts in a plastic tray and dump a whole box of baking soda over it; cover loosely and let sit for 24 hours. That's always done it for me.

In my experience you'll never get the odor out of kit box or instructions. Ditch the first, seal the instructions in a gallon-size ziplock bag.

Is the kit unbuilt?

Try washing the sprues, many people do this anyway, might help.I would think that using glue, primers, paints, washes, filters, and pigments during construction might cover up any leftover odor after washing.

If your talking about a completed build, then I can't think of anything

No, it is still in the sealed plastic bags. I got nauseated just by inpecting and handling it, so I would want to clean it before I start building it.

Left it in the garage for now, as suggested above. Will try the other methods later, if that doesn't help.

Thanks!

Yes,I don't do it but many like to clean the sprues of grease or mold release inild soap.

Old trick- baking soda.  Sprinkle a half cup of baking soda in bottom of a box.  Put kit parts and instructions in box. Cover box. Wait 10 days to two weeks.

Couple of dryer sheets in the box as you store that kit and get to it later.
