dinosaur- miscellaneous or diorama?
Posted by rocketman2000 on Sunday, August 8, 2021 4:43 PM

I have started a spinosaurus build.  My first thought was that it is a miscellaneous subject.  But the kit includes a base that is molded as a piece of ground (which I will be extending, and a couple of objects including a dead fish(prey) and a log. I will hopefully add ome vegetation.

So should I post a thread in misc or diorama?  Same question for entering contests.

This is a firstSurprise Don asking where to put a subjectSmile. If I recall dios have a story and usually a part of the scene stands proud of the main subject, ie power lines, trees, buildings. If the subject is center of scene and stands over other objects AND is the lone figure then it falls under vignette, which sorta translates into dio depending on the contest.

If it is for the Nats or other large show I would err on misc and let judges re catagorize it.

As for here on the forums, c'mon Don,anything you post anywhere will be well recieved. Looking forward to seeing your pre historic critter and base.Geeked

As I recall, that dino hung around rivers. Maybe you could model it standing in shallow water (Woodland Scenics Model Railroad Landscape Water Effect). I think that would tell a great story about that dino.

I would just [ut it in misc. or vigenete, but considering it will have a dead fish near it you might want t make sure there is a fishing license around its neck.  You ca never be to careful, a ranger T-rex might be in the area.

At the IPMS National level there is a Biological category in the Miscellaneous class.   Check with the local committee to see if they have similar.

Bases are bases, and unless you are doing something to the kit-supplied base that you would like to be evaluated you get no extra credit (at the National level) for a base.  If you do something and the beast is just walking through the scene, it is a vignette - a slice of time.   If there is a story it becomes a diorama.   However there is no miscellaneous vignette category in the Diorama class at the Nats. Check with the local committee.

Hi Don. I don't know about the rules and categories over there, but I think Ed has summed it up pretty well. As for a thread, I'd probably go for misc. Looking forward to seeing the finished beastie.

Very cool subject!

As far as the forum goes, you can post about it in the Figure & Misc subforum.  The description on the index page mentions dinosaurs specifically:

There are some neat dinosaur builds in that forum, too.

Hello!

With the amount of traffic we now have on the forums I say it doesn't really matter - al lthe people really wanting to read and comment it will have no problem finding it under "recent discussions" - and after some time they have to use google to find it anyway.

Good luck with your build and have a nice day

Paweł

All comments and critique welcomed. Thanks for your honest opinions!

Well, here at the Fine Scale Modeler modeling forum, the "Figures and Misc." category says:

Figures and Misc.

Military and other scale figures, dinosaurs, and more

And they mention dinosaurs specifically.
As far as IPMS contests, the 2021 Nationals have a pdf file that lists all model categories. On page 8/8, Dinosaurs are listed as category 800, all entries.
