Thanks all, good tips.  Sounds like better to start with gray and go from there rather than to start with "Brown" and try and make it gray.  I'll give it a shot.

You may get better results if you post a request for help in a specialty forum.  If the problem is unique to the genre, like airplanes, cars, figures, etc, go to the forum for that genre.  For help on tools, techiques, or painting, there are forums for those.

Many people assume everyone reads the general modeling forum, but this is not the case.

Great figures John. Would love to see more of your work. As for painting wood, I have nothing useful to add, other than stains. If the aircraft is being serviced there, stains from oil, etc would mark the wood a darker colour in places.

So your deck is a good resource.

I start with an overall warm gray like Dark Gull.

Paint individual boards here and there with careful masking using other shades of Gray.

If you use any browns stay neutral. MM used to sell a great color called Radome tan.

Tamiya made a nice one called Deck Tan.

I'm no expert on dios but here's a couple of examples from figure models.  This the wood hear isn' very aged or dry - just a bit of drybrush of light grey over brown with a black wash.

Exposed wood tends to dry out and gray.  So a base of a light grey, with some lighter and darker dry brushing and a dark grey wash.

Here this broken tree was done in grey with a dark wash.  The exposed wood was done in a tan with a dark wash
