It's ok!it does have a distinct profile!
Eugene,
Sorry I have to end this one so quickly - it's a 1/48 scale Junkers Ju-287. The '287 is a fan favorite of mine. The 1/72 Huma kit is shown below.
“Ya ya ya, unicorn papoi!”
So, who is posting the next shadow?
TB,
If you ever want to build the DFS-346, I can scan the 3-view off the instruction sheet. I tend to keep them for some reason. And there are photos on the Internet, but most are of models or illustrations. There are a few actual photos of it hanging from a Tu-4.
Yeah, RealG!
That would be my luck, BUT, some good pictures or drawings and I could scratch it! And the TreibFlugel could be a Volunteer!
Holly molly, it is a rare thing. No wonder nobody guessed it.
Tanker-Builder OOh! Dats Purty, Me wants one ob dem!
OOh!
Dats Purty, Me wants one ob dem!
TB, it's the Huma kit in 1/72. But I think Huma is long gone.
Rarely seen, yes. But not fabled. I can only speculate how it would have performed with that plexi nose cap and non area ruled fuselage. Perhaps like many 1950s prototypes, it would have just hit the "sonic wall" and remained stubbornly subsonic.
Whoa... unicorn.
Okay, it's the end of the day for me, so the Mystery Plane is revealed to be...
The DFS-346, a supersonic research aircraft built during WW II by Germany. The Soviets captured the aircraft, took it back to Russia, and hung it under the wing of a Tu-4 (aka Boeing B-29 clone) and may or may not have tested it in flight. Note the airflow fences on the wings, something that became a bit of a fashion statement on Soviet fighters into the 1960s.
Okay next photo please.
armornut Me 1101?
Me 1101?
Oh Armornut, you are SO close! WE (the US) took the Messerschmitt P.1101 and let Bell Aircraft study it to develop their X-5.
Okay, absolute, final, final, final clue #10- The Russians were hoping to use it like the Bell X-1.
C'mon, anyone? Bueller? Bueller?
we're modelers it's what we do
castelnuovo Dornier Alpha Jet?
Dornier Alpha Jet?
Nein, nicht korrekt! Es ist raketengetrieben.
OK final, final clue before the reveal - the Russians took it after WW II.
It has been 24 hrs with no hits. Shall I reveal the Mystery Plane of the Day so we can move on? You know, to keep it fresh.
OK one last hint - It's German.
keavdog F-100? F-8?
F-100?
F-8?
It predates the two aircraft - that's clue #7.
castelnuovo I don't see engines at the back.
I don't see engines at the back.
Because the rocket nozzles are small - that's clue #6.
Tanker-Builder Okay, Then it's gotta be an Airbus of some kind
Okay, Then it's gotta be an Airbus of some kind
Nope! Clue #4 & 5 - It's not French, and the engines are at the back.
castelnuovo The French Mystery purhaps?
The French Mystery purhaps?
Non, monsieur.
Okay, clue #3 - Not a 737 glider, but built by a glider maker. That should whittle the suspects down quite a bit!
