Thanks for the kind words about the diorama, I really appreciate them, it means a lot coming from a jury of my peers so to speak.

The package arrived intact at its destination yesterday and there weren't any stray pieces rattling around inside the case, so, success! And my part in this is done. The veteran will be presented with the diorama tomorrow.

Hi Bill:

Yeah, I thought I had seen it before and reveled in the simple yet complex story it told.

I remember that diorama. It is much nicer than you admit to.

Hi!

I enjoyed what you decided to do. Me? Well, I build them and give them away after a certain amount of time. I enjoy looking at them then decide, Okay? Who's going to a new Home Today? I believe that I will continue to do this as well. Many times I have thinned the stash by donations to Veterans Recreational Services at V.A. facilities.

Thanks for sharing that story.  To you and all of us it's just a model.  To him it's so much more.

As I start to run out of display space (especially for aircraft) I have found myself giving away or taking a small fee to cover costs for many of my builds over the last couple of years. Most go to veterans or the children of veterans and represent the equipment they used.

Many end up shipped all over North America and although it actually cost me money (often quite a bit) it is well worth it as the model truly means something to them. Since my pleasure comes out of the build more than the than I benefit as well.

Some were built to a very specific source such as this one for one of the guys in the picture.

Some were more genaric like this one built for a Marine pilot that flew them but didn't have any special markings

I was a kid in college, and of course, broke.

My mom had just married my stepfather and they moved into a new home.

I had a room at this home and put many of my model kits in the bedroom. I also still built kits while at college as well as when I was home during breaks.

My mom had a yard sale and I let her put most of my car model kits in the yard sale. One of the neighborhood men liked my car kits so well that he bought them all. He also had some NASCAR kits he asked if I could build for him.

I'm glad to have free model kits to build, but had never built NASCARs before. I probably built close to a half dozen for him.

Everyone of his fingers were larger than my thumbs and he didn't have the dexterity to build them. He gave me a bonafide glue bomb and I rebuilt it for him. It also gave me my affinity for rebuilding old, crappy built kits.

That is a great story.  You undoubtedly have provided this vet with some wonderful joy.

MFSOB -

I'm an 82 year old vet, ARMY, and I love this story. Thank you so much for arranging to get it in the gentleman's hands, it will no doubt be treasured.

As a long time model builder, I have to say you did a seriously fine job of the entire display. Well done gift and model, good for you Sir.

It never occurred to me that anyone would want to actually give me money for a model I had built - I build for my own pleasure (well, most of the time). Until I got an e-mail out of the blue the other day.

It was from a guy whose step-father, in his 80s, had finally started talking about his time in the US Navy, from WWII clear through to Vietnam. Suffice it to say, he'd seen more than a few things and wanted to get them off his chest before his ticket was pulled. The first ship he served on was the USS Lenawee, APA-195, a Haskell-class transport that had served in three wars. The same ship I had built in 1/700 scale as part of a small diorama and added to my modeling web pages. Which this guy found when he started looking for information on his step-dad's ships.

He wanted to assemble a collection of models of all the ships and boats his step-father had served on. Would I consider selling my Lenawee model to him?

Wow. At first I thought, Why would anyone want my meager effort? Then I got to thinking - I had no personal tie to this model (unlike some others), it had been a (ultimately) fun project, and this guy thought it would make a member of the Greatest Generation very happy as he closes out his final chapter. In the end, it was a no-brainer; I told him I'd be honored. We agreed on a price that would cover my costs for materials and shipping - no charge for the fun I had building it.

Thankfully I build all my models to fit into plastic cases (we have cats), so packing it wasn't too horrible. I'm headed down to the UPS office first thing Monday.
