What's Your Worse Modeling Habits??
Posted by Anonymous on Saturday, April 24, 2004 11:08 PM
Ok everyone, we all know right from wrong. What is your worse modeling habit. And NO, you're dirty workbench does not COUNT!!!! LOL We all have that.

I would say mine is using the paint right out of the bottle when brush painting. I know, I know it screws up the jar, crust dries everywhere, etc, etc.....I just can't help myself!!! What's yours?

Impatience. Just little bouts, not all the time.

With decals most recently.

My worst modeling habit is thinking about the pains of cleaning an airbrush thus sometimes make me to delay the painting of my models to a later date.Big Smile [:D]

Getting rushed toward the end of a build!

Usually leads to errors that could have been avoided.

There's so many, where to begin?
-Painting straight from the bottle
-Not waiting for the paint to cure before touching
But I think the worst habit I have is being too conservative. I want to try new things, yet I'm afraid of ruining a kit that I spent a good amount of money on. Especially with weathering, but I'm trying to get over it.

hmmm............................let me see.
-impatience. i jump the gun on almost every build and have to backtrack to make it work.
-paint straight from the bottle.
-remove masks much too soon. (see naked 109)
-poor photographic habits. (see naked 109/strawberry field)
-hurry the finish.
-delay trying something new that will improve the build.
-spend too much time on research and not enough time building.

or maybe i should have said all of the above.

buying too many kits Tongue [:P] - cos I spend more time choosing and getting that next masterpiece, before I can actually finish the other half-built kits on my workbench. But there's an up-side Cool [8D] - I'll soon have my own collection to rival any LHS Big Smile [:D] (I hope to achieve this when I retire Big Smile [:D] - I'm only 22yo).

Dirty workbench doesnt count eh that was the first thing that popped into my mind but the list is long.
Not cleaning my airbrush after painting
Painting from the jar
spending hours on interior detail and rushing the finish
losing parts
not keeping my models out of my kids way
starting new projects before finishing the last one.
ect ect ect.

Too much buying and posting, and not enough building!

By the way, I never realized it was a no-no to brush paint straight from the bottle (as long as the paint is thin enough)...can anyone explain to me why?

Mine would be starting a kit... buying a new kit... glue/paint some of it together... but another new kit... glue/paint some of that kit together... and on and on and on... example would be, flying sub interior glued together/crew painted, Enterprise bridge crew painted, Airwolf cockpit modified and wired for lights,Concorde fuselage built, etc, etc, etc... sad ain't it.

But on the plus side, every once in a while, I complete several kits about the same time.

rushing things (just ask the wife LoL) also trying to find the "quick fix" for everything, being lazy about cleaning the airbrush (me being a paint sprayer by profesion tooAshamed [*^_^*]) starting the next project before finishing one. trying things beyond my skills. procrastinating and dithering about rather than getting on with the project,
AND MOSTLY DOING IT THE DUMB WAY RATHER THAN THE RIGHT WAY!!!
its a wonder i ever complete anything, mind you i have done some work on my concorde nightmare and N.M.F.lightning so things are looking up.

Because.....and realize I am just kind of saying what has always been told to me....the paint will dry out as you are sitting their using it, the thinner in the paint will start to evaporate, and generally speaking you end up wiping the excess paint on the sides of the jar which creates this nasty crust, and what causes it to be such a pain to open. They actually addressed that same issue in this month's paint by brush article. Personally I thought I was the only offender!!! LOL You come to my house, and we paint out of the bottle over here!!!! LOL I didn't realize that all of my "bad habits" were common to most modlers.....hey, if majority rules, and the majority creates the morals.....how can any of our modeling habits be bad?! Well I agree to the above reasons. My worst:
Buying new kits before I finish started kits
Brush painting out of the bottle
Rushing to finish
Not enough weathering(to some members)

Mine is that I'll get frustrated with something, such as a mistake or bad paint job, and just put it away and not work on it again for a long long time. I just started back on my Spit that was sitting for a couple of months because I screwed the paint up. Once I picked it up again though, it's gone smoothly. I don't know that there's a word for this problem, but there it is.
I paint out of the bottle as well, but it's never been a problem to me.

I feel that my worst modeling habit is ... starting a project ... getting so far ... and then being charmed away from the project at hand ... by, you guessed it ... another project. I feel that both projects suffer from this short attention span ... if I could just take care of one project and then move onto the next ... I think I would be a better modeler ... oh, and I too paint straight from the bottle ... Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

But, all in all I am having fun ... and that I feel is the most important thing in this hobby ... if you aren't having a good time doing something ... why do it ... ??? Big Smile [:D]

I usually manage to keep from doing more than 2 projects at once, so I manage to avoid the "start one, stop to start another, stop to start yet another" cycle.... but the flip side is that as I get close to finishing something, the prospect of a new project usually gets me too excited and I wind up with my worst modeling habit:

Impatience!! (or as some here have said, rushing the finish) which has lead to some sloppiness in painting, decaling, etc....

My two almost-complete projects are managing - so far - to avoid this one... I'll let you know how it goes....

I paint out of the paint cans, but I don't wipe the excess on the side of the opening - I found that crust is a pain, I have a humbrol grey that the lid sits 1/4 in. higher than it should. so I stopped wiping the excess on the can.

Well then, I guess I'm okay since I don't paint out of the bottle, I paint out of the cap for touch ups. Depth perception is gone and I got tired of dipping my brush in too deep. So since I use the cap and not the bottle, I guess I don't have to worry about the thinner in the paint evaporating...Tongue [:P]Big Smile [:D]

OK, now I have a little perspective on the paint-from-the-bottle taboo.
Ain't gonna stop doing it, though. Never has caused a problem in 30+ years of modeling, and I don't reckon it's gonna start causing problems now!

Next thing ya kow, somebody's gonna tell me it's a no-no to lick the excess cyanoacrylate from seams when gluing parts together...

Just kidding. Wink [;)]I don't do that.

Mine usually involves a fingerprint of some sort...

Either in an area that was recently glued or painted. I tend to 'jump' to the next step without letting things dry properly

The other one for me is that I often generate a lot of 'clutter'. Drives me crazy!! I absolutely hate when I reach across the desk and knock something over because I was too lazy to put it away when I was done with it!

Lack of patience.
Parallel building.....Got 15 in various stages of which 6 waiting to get colored....
Occasionaly too lazy to fill that small gap which eventually shows badly and having to returned after the camo and decals are on....Funny thing though is that the patchwork makes the whole thing to look more real. At least to my eyes......
