Hello, i am a very new modeler. i am attempting to make the academy 1/72 f-35a but i have run into some problems. the f-35 canopy is tinted, and i tried to tint it with food coloring but it didn't work and i ended up disfiguring it... i don't have the comforts of an airbrush so i can't spray it with clear. are there any ways of tinting canopies without an airbrush? could i brush apply clear paint? thank you.
You might try looking around on YouTube. There are all kinds of videos with different techniques for canopy tinting there.
"You can have my illegal fireworks when you pry them from my cold, dead fingers...which are...over there somewhere."
How about this stuff,I know their Smoke in the jar is used with an airbrush to tint canopies, maybe this will work for you

Have a look in the Aircraft forum, too:

I think there are a couple of threads on the technique.
As far as tinting with food coloring goes, I'm curious how it disfigured your canopy. I think of the technique using Future, the acrylic floor covering You add a couple drops of food coloring to the liquid, then dip the canopy. Future is pretty benign and doesn't attack the plastic. And if the technique doesn't come out the way you want, you can easily clean the canopy with Windex or other weak ammonia solution, which is also pretty harmless to the piece. What did you use on yours?
The bigger the government, the smaller the citizen.
the canopy was disfigured by the heat of the food coloring dye, as for the future.... i don't know if my country has it. could i use white glue mixed with water to recreate the future? or maybe just brush apply clear smoked paint?

Wow, the food coloring gave off heat? And it's food coloring, and so, you can eat it? Did it have something like lye in it? Yeah, I don't know of any such product here in the US. The most common food coloring is probably the product made by a large spice distributor, McCormick's. It's definitely not a product that gives off heat.
I don't think you can use thinned white glue to replace the clear acrylic liquid. Some of the others need to chime in here and talk about the other clear products, made specifically for modeling, that might be used.
Future, which ended up called Pledge with Future Shine, is discontinued now, anyway. Some of us used it for things like dipping clear parts, and for gloss-coating before applying decals, or washes. But many modelers chose not to use it, but to use products from companies like Tamiya, Vallejo, and others, specifically made for scale modelers.
could it work if i dip my canopy into thinned smoke paint? thanks

I know that Tamiya have a tinting spray can in medium to dark grey.
