Long distance shopping
Posted by jimbot58 on Sunday, February 11, 2024 12:40 AM

I don't do it often, but a few times I found myself locating items I wanted from overseas. I live just about in the middle of the USA, in the rocky mountain region. A couple of times I ordered small items from Australia from a company called BNA model world. The items were small, sent by air mail, and actually cost less to ship than if they came from SB's, just a couple of state lines away from me.

I have also obtained items from the Czech Republic (Eduard for one) and Germany. One item I ordered surprised me as it was shipped from eastern Europe eastward and came the long way around the planet. And then of course a few items from Canada as well.

Another item I ordered off of Fleabay one time was shipped from Slovakia (a non modeling item). I didn't realize where it was coming from until I got the shipping confirmation.

Surpizingly, most of these items, shipping was cheaper that I thought. Other items I declined to order as shipping was more that the product. England and Japan seem very expensive.

I have almost circled the globe a few times and was just curious if any you have done the same.

I would also mention that a few of the things took almost 4 weeks to arrive.

Heh...I just received a package from Sprue Brothers that took almost 3 weeks to get here, due to the USPS giving it the grand tour of the United States.  The same day I placed that order, I also ordered some 1mm diameter magnets from Amazon for my 1/48 Revell SR-71A canopy which shipped directly from the manufacturer in China...they arrived 2 days before my Sprue Brothers order.  USPS can be called a lot of things...but they can't be called reliable or consistent.

With orders from places like BNA, if the cost of the stuff I'm getting from them justifies it, I pay the extra 10 bucks for DHL shipping.  Gets it here in 2-3 days, all the way from Australia.

If you're not in a rush you can get some fantastic deals.  BNA are great - the always seem to have what I'm looking for but can't find anywhere else.  Lot's of good stuff from the Ukraine too.  I've found great deals from China where it's $3 shipping and 4-6 weeks.  Kinda fun, because I forget about the order and then it's like Christmas when it shows up.

Thanks,

John

I was looking for 1/72 B-24 masks and found BNA, which them for much less than domestic shops and the shipping was less.  Got my order in about three weeks and they provided accurate tracking information.

I also deal with some central European cottage industries for ship fittings and scale 3D printed parts that are a pleasure to work with.
