Severn-1/72-Airfix , has anyone built one yet? Or The Smaller type, supposedly out there!
Hi:
I hope this won't be too long. I am in the process of building at least four models at once. I work on one, get it to a glue or paint dry stage and work on another in the interim. Right now I am working on the U-2540 (R.O.G.), The Tirpitz ( Kangnam) and the kit #07280 Airfix "Severn" Class lifeboat and putting one piece at a time on the Catamaran "Playstation"(Last one's a bugger!).
These have been fun in their way and keep me looking forward to something quiet. My body, from the Parkinson's is starting to be affected. I am going to model until I cannot pick up a brush! Anyway, my question was if anyone had built this kit and or the smaller boat and what did you think of them? Were they Good, Bad or indifferent? I do know this kit( 07280) has a gazillion parts it seems, and they are all over the place on the sprues!
They are molded in a very light grey, kinda soft plastic, and well done for the most part. The disappointment for me? The Windows, although workable("They get awful thin" Are full of Sinkmarks. I have been replacing them with custom cut plastic from a C.D. Jewel Case. Bought twenty four of them years ago and haven't regretted it yet! The boat has 17 fair sized windows and if done right All the interior is visible.
The other boat, a smaller class, looks to have the same amount or close. This Severn has kept me busy and for that I am glad. I just wish they would've put the color call outs in Tamiya, Humbrol or Testors and done a full and correct job in indicating part or detail colors. They fell flat on their face here. The Humbrol colors they do call out, don't even come close to the real boat's coloration!
I have Photos a friend sent me and they are color corrected for publication in a journal for those interested in Seagoing Emergency Response Craft! Geez, there's a lot of them around and some even built by manufacturers here in the States! Fascinating Vessels.
What caught my eye on the SEVERN was, I will, being real careful, be able to have the Cabin Removeable so you can see the full interior, and there's a LOT of detail in there! Although it has a multiple piece hull, It went together quite easily Everything lined up and darned near fell into place. Oh! For the person who has no interest in a full Hull model they have cut line indicater lines inside the hull so you can waterline her, But, they do NOT give you a Bottom Plate! Anyway if you have built any of the two, would give me your opinion of the kit, Please? T.B.
