Help a dummy out... Please
Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, May 12, 2004 9:45 AM
When reading reviews and such I'm not sure if I'm reading things right;
Example; P51/Mustang I and Ia. Now is this reading like this; P51/Mustang "eye" and "eye a" or is it; P51/Mustang "one" and "one a" ??

Same here; PzKpfw Ia/FlammPanzer I..

There are others as well..
Thanks for any insite into this

Yes, those are all 1's, or I've always thought that. The only time I can remember it being "eye" is in Nam, when it was called "eye" Corps.

 I may get so drunk, I have to crawl home. But dammit, I'll crawl like a Marine.

So now for the $64 question, why not just use a 1 ????
Thanks everyone.

I think it just looks better to use Roman numerals. For example, which looks better:

A-7 Corsair II
A-7 Corsair 2

There may be a "Real" reason though.

To confuse things even more, the true "First" Corsair was the O2U-1, 2, & 4 from around 1926. The F4U Corsair was not called the "Corsair II" although it really was. The Corsair II was the A-7.

I agree, its just that in most magazines, the Roman 1 is the same as the capital i... on this board the capitial i is different; and thats why I was confused as to which it was...but then looking at A-7 Corsair II, one could think eleven!!!!! I guess its just knowing the subject..... Thanks

You are absolutely right. I've gotten so accustomed to computers that I forgot the "Old Days". In fact it seems like I remember some old typewriters that didn't even have a [1] key on them, you had to use an uppercase "I".

Shouldn't that have made the century series fighters, such as the Voodoo, thunderchief etal, the C series?

Now that just sounds like a Mercedes!
