Books for Newbies
Posted by Anonymous on Monday, May 17, 2004 7:00 PM
I want to start modelling and painting, airbrushing models. I have only put together 1 or 3 models before when i was younger. Now I really want to get into modelling and airbrushing them. Can any of you give me a recommendation on a book for a complete newbie (ex. Modelling and Painting for Dummies) thx ...

PS. i know people dont like to here questions asked over and over. I have used the search but it gave me a strange error, multiple times. "An error occurred on the server when processing the URL. Please contact the system administrator with the following email address: webmaster@kalmbach.com."

Welcome to the forum! Sometimes finding exactly what you are looking for is harder than just risking the wrath of people by asking again [[)] Don't worry about it, It's not a big deal at all.

Before you run out and buy a bunch of books, try the free route!

FSM has a PDF file for beginning modelers. It can be downloaded from this page:
http://www.finescale.com/fsm/default.aspx?c=ss&id=33

Testors has some good modeling guides for downloading here: http://www.testors.com/hobbyist_guides.asp and FSM has a good group of articles here: http://www.finescale.com/fsm/dynamic/browse.aspx?sub=13 Some of them are references to back issues of FSM but many of them are available online and can be downloaded. You don't have to bookmark the page, just look in the "Browse By Subject" link in the green column to the left.

Also this forum has thousands of bits of information. If you can't find what you are looking for, just ask and someone will have an answer.

Im not sure which subject of modeling you are interested in, but a pretty good book for beginners is The Basics of scale Automotive Modeling by Pat Covert. You may not be interested in the automotive area, but it still would be a good read to familiarize yourself with the tools needed, types of paint and glue and all that good stuff. It pretty much applies to all areas of modeling. You can order this book of the Kalmbach website, but i would give ebay a look first, as I have seen it go for abut 5-10 bucks.
