How many models do you have of the same subject?
Posted by luke on Tuesday, May 18, 2004 8:45 PM
I have always wondered why someone would build heaps of models of the one subject. And I'm not talking about the second, third or even fourth model of a P-51 in your collection.

We all have multiples of the same model, but the kit may vary in:
- manufacturer
- OOB vs aftermarket vs scratchbuilt
- scale (eg a/c in 1/48 & 1/72)
- subject depiction (eg use of different decals, era's, refit/config's)
- display (eg waterline vs full hull)
- etc.

But I've seen some "Phantom Phreaks" and "Messerschmitt Maniacs" whose collection ranges into the high twenties, and possibly higher [:0].

I personally have 2x USS New Jerseys & 2x Bismarcks (diff scale & manuf.), 2x P-47s & Corsairs & F-16s. And thats it. I dont avoid buying multiples of the one model nor kit, I just like the variety - although I'm only 23 so there may come a point in my lifetime that I do more of the one subject Wink [;)].

I have two USS Fletchers (1/350 & 1/700), 2 SBD Dauntlesses, and 2 F-117 Nighthawks (each in 1/72 & 1/48). I'm not quite sure how the duplication happened, but it doesn' t bother me.

I do find it astounding to go to model shows and see someone entering a dozen Spitfires or Mustangs, each in different camo schemes. Sometimes it's variants, like different Marks in the case of the Spitfire. Other times I think it's a kind of fetish.

Man, this is a tough question in the armor community. If you break it down to exact model (ie: PzKpfw III) and exact version (ie: Ausf A), then I only have about 4 of the same model. However, if you allow multiple versions, I have 14 duplicates:

2 Jagdpanthers
3 King Tigers
2 Marders
4 Panthers
4 Pz II
5 Pz III
5 Pz IV
3 Stug III
5 Tiger I
2 Kubelwagons
2 Stuarts
7 Shermans
4 Jeep Willys
2 T-34

The most I ever had was forty-five or so Bf 109's... Down to eighteen of them now. Same number of Fw 190's.

The most I have of one subject at the moment is the P-40, with right around forty kits. (go figure) But about half of those are in 'the collection' and won't ever be built. At least not by me...

Just looking around the room I'm in

11 Shermans, 7 Panthers, 4 Shermans on the work bench.

Please don't ask me to count any other rooms.

For a single variant, p51-d is tops on my list with 6 (2 complete), otherwise, it's Spitfires with 9, spread over MKs 2, 5, 8,9 and 14 (1 complete).

hmmm, wasn't there a similar thread to this a little while ago?
Either way, I don't have a single double of anything...YET!
I don't even own a double of anything. However, the t-55 has always been one of my favourite tanks, and I'll eventually end up modeling a number of them. That, and a couple of f-14 tomcats as well.

4 AM McLarens (2 each to build with and without body panels)
2 AM Grand Corvettes
5 RM F-100 Tbirds (I wanted to build four planes in flight).
2 AMT Dodge Vipers (2 teenage nieces want one each)
2 Minicraft Cherokee 140s
3 RM Sprint Cars
3 Minicraft 777-200s (Price mismarked at hobby shop)

The (many) others are singles - I like diversity.

Given my recent efforts, I should probably buy two of every new one so I will have extra parts to replace the ones I mess up on the original. Shock [:O]

I've been building models off and on since about 10 years old (37 now) I think first it was Battleships, then some cars, some planes and recently tanks (mostly because tanks are easier to store.)
Until recently all my models have used Testors glue, thus they fell apart. I should take a picture of each model good or bad just so I have something when it gets destroyed.

5-6 ships
5-10 four wheeled vehicles
15ish aircraft
3-4 helicopters
7 tanks or tanklike things(warhammer)

So Aircraft B29, B25, A10, V22, F16, F117, SR71, P38, F4, HU288, F51, "pre-117 idea for stealth bomber", PBY5a(civ), PBY5a(black), berkut.

I think there are a few more planes, but I can't remember what they are. The only ones that still exist are the HU288(not complete and never will), black Cat, V22, f16 and berkut.

I have too many that I need to build once before I start repeating myself. There are some kits that I want to take another crack at later, to see how things have improved, skill-wise. But for right now, i refuse to buy any kit that I have already built.

Nothing that large numbers for me... At best, at any one time, I had 9 Patrouille de France Dassault Alpha-jets in 1/72 and 7 Blue Angels A-4 Skyhawks (6 Esci in 1/48, plus a TA-4J from Hasegawa in 1/72), and 5 Me-163 Komet (1 in 1/32 and 4 in 1/72).

Un-built, I still have about 9 Skyhawks, various variants & manufacturers but all in 1/72... Next would have to be the M1 Abrams, of which I have 5 in 1/72, from various manufacturers.

I don't have that many models, but i have bought quite a number of B-17 Kits... 5 so far. first was a 1/72 Hasegawa B-17F, then a 1/48 Monogram B-17F. Both of these i screwed up big time. the next was more fortunate; it's an academy B-17F in 1/72, and it's sitting on my shelf. Then came the revell one that i've given up on (Raised panel line HELL), and the one i'm working on, a 1/72 B-17G from academy. I plan to do the whole line, from the YB-17 to the B-17H and YB-40.... Big Smile [:D]

1/35th Tiger 1
1/35th "Easy Eight" Sherman
1/35th Stuart
1/35th 2 1/2 Ton Truck
1/35th M3 Lee
One big Bird of Prey (forgot the scale)

I have a compulsive disorder for F4u Corsairs. At least four F4u-4s, three F4u-5s, three F4u-1Ds plus a 1/8 scale RC version, an FG-1D, and currently building a F4u-1A to replace the one that was smashed by a furnace duct falling on it.

Funny thing is, I'm not really excited about the looks of the Corsair.

The most I have is:

7 Hinds, various makes, 8th one building
7M1 Abrams tanks
7 F-15 Eagles
11 MiG 21's
6 F-4 Phantoms
All three modern British Invincible-class Aircraft Carriers
Three Kirov-class battlecruisers (going for all four)
5 Forestal-class Aircraft Carriers (two modern, three 1960's era)
3 Midway-class carriers (1950's pre-angle deck)
6 Missouri-class battleships (2 in 1980/90's fit)

30 WWII Japanese Destroyers.

And these are the ones I remember!

I have over 30 models of the various incarnations of Godzilla, from makers such as Kaiyodo, Billiken, Wave, Volks, Tsukuda, Bandai, Aurora, Paradise, and Inoue Arts. Never picked up the Lindberg or Polar Lights kits, though.
Conversely, I only have four Gamera kits, all Kaiyodo.

For military subjects, I reckon the Tigers win: five Tiger Is (Fujimi 1/76, Tamiya 1/35, two Tamiya 1/25, and a Tamiya 1/16), and six Tiger IIs (Fujimi 1/76, Tamiya 1/35 Porsche and Henschel: one each, Bandai 1/24, and Tamiya 1/16 Porsche and Henschel: one each).

Other than those, I have plenty of other subjects of which I have two or three kits, like Shermans, B-17s, Ultraman...you know, the usual.

I'd say the majority of duplicates I have will leave me as gifts to other people. However, I may have what some would consider duplicates in Aircraft, but they are in fact different modifications/configurations of a basic Airframe. For example, I have 3 C-130's I'll be building, but each will have a different Nose or mission configuration of the Aircraft that I actually worked on or have riden in.

There are quite a few kits of which I have three or four copies. The "winner," by far, in my pile is eight Trimaster Me 262s.

i'm just getting started as of last year, and i spent 6 months of that learning how to airbrush before beginning to build seriously, but in that time, i'm in love with the 1/48 Tamiya P-51D, my favorite aircraft of all times!!! i have 2 built, and 5 in progress. 2 109s, and 3 corsairs of different varients. later.
