Airfix 60th anniversary D-day set

some Airfix kits are well made and fit well, but in the main be prepared for alot of sanding and filling.

The main thing to remember is that a lot of the Airfix kits are very old, but on the other hand they are very cheap.

As long as you don't expect Tamigawa quality, you won't be disapointed.

Not sure if I wanna risk it. I have to think about it a little more. But my main reason for wanting the set is the 1/72 DUKW and of course it would be nice to have a couple of the other kits in the set in my stash also.

I've been building Airfix kits since they first became readily available here in Kansas (somewhere circa 1958-59). In 1/72 scale they range from great to "only the sprue is usable". If you "cut you teeth" way back when, then you learned about body putty, sand paper (anybody here remember the "Airfix Rivet King?") and sweat. But they were cheap and readly available. Even today if you want a 1/72 model of certain aircraft, Airfix is the only way to go (Stirling, Hampden, Do-17E/F, Do-217E, J2F-6 Duck, TBD, F-80 come to mind). Don't get me wrong, Airfix kits aren't "shake & bake" kits that most people seem to want these days. But if you're willing to work and expend some sweat, you can end up with a model that you can be proud of.

PS - I haven't built one of their armor kits in probably 10 years or so (a Stug III) but most of them are pretty fair. I could be wrong but I think their LVT was the only one produced in small scale (1/76 - 1/72)

i have only built 1 airfix kit, the HMS fearless, the bow (the front right?) didn't connect right, one side bent inwards (like it should) and the other was straight. i might give them another try if i want somthing they make, if that doesn't turn out good, i wont buy airfix again.

Airfix is a legend on their own....So I advise you to go for it as long as you are willing to invest your money in....And also keep the box artwork..In a few years it will be a collector's choice...After all 10 kits under the same roof it's a bargain...

I noticed that there is an Airfix DUKW in this month's copy of FSM.

Looks pretty good.

I saw this in a local shop last week, it was £25 which works out at
very good value as the individual kits are at least £4 each nowadays.
Plus there are a number of kits in the box - DUKW, GMC truck, LCM, LVCP
and maybe others - that Airfix haven't sold individually for ages.
The coastal emplacement model was originally intended more as a toy I think, but with
a bit of work it could make a good diorama setting.
The one odd thing is that the single aircraft in the set is a Bf109 - considering the
virtually non-existent Luftwaffe presence on D-Day, a Typhoon or P-51 would be more appropriate!
