"Local Hobby Shops..."
Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, June 23, 2004 3:49 PM
Hey all-

Been reading a bit about going to the LHS. Unfortunately for me, here in the Capital Region of New York, we only have three shops. One being the area Hobby Town, one being pretty much dedicated to trains and the other a hodge-podge of 'girly' stuff. The local Hobby Town isn't too bad. Decent place to pick up basic supplies but their model selection leaves a bit to be desired, especially the 1:72 stuff. Plus the owner is a nice guy.

But...

I like shopping on-line for stuff but I like to have the option of going to a place and 'window-shop'. The local Hobby Town does not do that for me. They seem to be more interested in RC cars and NAPCAR die-casts. Is there anyone here from southern NY (Not the city or the Island), Southern VT, Eastern Mass or Connecticut that has any hobby shops that they frequent that would be recommended?

cheers
dave

Heya dave... Mike from Saratoga here Wink [;)]

I think the train shop you speak of is here in town, right?? Other than that- there is one up north (Exit 17) in South Glens Falls- but it mainly caters to R/C racing... there's Victoria Station in Warrensburg which is trains but also a good selection of modeling stuff... past that, the only other big store is in Plattsburgh 2 hours north... they are kind of like a Hobbytown...but that's about it...what I wouldn't give for a Hobby Lobby to open around here...

I would recommend The Spare Time Shop in Marlborough, MA. Pretty impressive selection, especially if you're into armor. There's Hobby Bunker in Malden that has a good selection as well, but I think Spare Time is better.

Acutally the train shop is Mohawk something-or-other in Schenectady. Same with the other place.

I didn't realise that there was something like that in Saratoga. Every time I am there I get dragged around the foofie stores on the main drag. Can't even sneak away to Peabody's for a pint! Sad [:(]

Actually the guy who owns the Plattsburgh store is the same guy who owns the HT here in smAlbany.

The Spare Time Shop is worth the drive from ANYWHERE! They have everything by everyone. I've never seen a better-stocked hobby shop anywhere.
