What is the best mail-order site?
Posted by Lucien Harpress on Wednesday, July 7, 2004 11:13 AM
Being in the back-woods hole where I live, mail-order is really a good option for me. What I need to know, though, is what site has the best-

Selection?
Price?
And because I don't have a credit card or fax, what ones have the option of paying with a check? (Besides, I'm a little paranoid about Credit Card theft online. I know this is probably unfounded, with the secure transactions and all, but still...)

Thanks in advance!

both squadron and international hobby take money orders, i believe personal checks also. international hobby takes a little longer but they seem ok. just go through the ordering process on their site, when you get to the point where you confirm the order, print it out, send that in with the check or money order.

now these are the two i have used i cannot speak of others. good luck.

Selection and price are going to vary from site to site depending on the specific items you want. I've always that that GreatModels has some of the best prices across the board, but individual kits can sometimes be found cheaper if you're willing to search. For example, I think Hometown Hobbies has better prices on photo-etch sets, but their kits are slightly more expensive.

I can't speak for check or money order policies since all my transactions are done by credit card.

I have also ordered from squadron.com and modelmecca.com

I use Squadron and Hobby Surplus both are good both are good and takes money orders, checks ect......But if you have a checking account I would see about a bank card. These things are great and can be used as a debit or credit card as long as you have money in bank to cover it.Most of these sites use pay pal for internet security as far for your worrys about using a credit card or bank card.It is secure and you will see a pad lock down about the bottom right hand side.Pay pal is a dirict link to banks and buissinesses, this allows you your privitcey on the internet.Digger

I use greatmodels a lot and do write them checks. I think www.rollmodels.com has better prices, but not always the selection that greatmodels has. The thing about greatmodels is that they go out to get what they obtain. They don't necessarily have more in stock then the next guy.

Personaly, I like the fact that great models lets you know right on the screen if an item is in stock or not. Also they are cheaper than squadron whom I also shop. I guess it all depends on what you want, how much you want to spend, and how fast you want it.

I've only dealt with Great models.com, I run my order thru checkout, but at some point you will be able to select the option to print out your order to mail in with check or money order.I also love the fact that if you give them your e-mail, they will notify you every step of the way on the status of your order, INCLUDING a UPS tracing number so you even know exactly where in the U.S. your model is. PLUS..they have a toll free number to call if you have questions...that means alot to me.

Hannants. Never had a problem with them. Even when I lived in Belgium.
