chrome plating removal
Posted by paulnchamp on Tuesday, July 13, 2004 6:45 PM
Does anybody know an easy way to remove the chrome plating (all of it) from plastic parts? Normally I carefully scrape it off, but these pieces are too intricate for that route. If anybody has any suggestions, I'd be grateful. Thanks!

I soak them in Simple Green cleaner. Throw the parts in the stuff in the morning, wash them off when I get home from work. It even takes the clear undercoat stuff off.

Thanks Dan - I thought I remembered hearing about Simple Green somewhere on the forum. I'll give it a try.

I use bleach, soak it for just a little while and when you look back at it, the chrome is gone. Rinse and paint.

Yep, another vote for S/G here too.

Takes the plating off and leaves the deatail behind.
Environmentally and people friendly as well.

Cheers, Pete.

Perhaps not as environmentaly friendly as Simple Green, but Easy-Off oven cleaner will strip chrome off styrene in a few minutes without any problems at all.

Just be sure you are in a well-ventilated area and wearing protective gloves as this stuff is pretty harsh on skin.

Mr. Clean works too.

With the Simple Green, Clorox, Easy Off, Mr. Clean, Alcohol, and Castrol Super-Clean that I buy, my wife wonders why the house isn't clean. Whistling [:-^]

Thanks for all the advice, guys. At one time we had some Simple Green in the house, but it's gone, so I ended up using the bleach. Took about 90% of it off, and I carefully scraped off the rest. I appreciate all the input!
