Give Me The Skinny On Photobucket
Posted by Model Grandpa on Sunday, August 15, 2004 12:43 AM
I see some people use Photobucket and I am thinking about an account for general picture posting on the forums.

Is there any problems, issue or downside to using Photobucket?

I've been using them for awhile now. They are very easy to use and free. I like that I can upload as many pic as I want at one time.
I really like them and I think they are much better than my old host, Villagephotos.

I agree with Scott.
It is a great way to store photos and it is all I use now.

Dan, I haven't found any downside from using Photobucket.
It's easy, free, and it works.
Does it get get better than that?

Dan,
I have only been using photobucket due to problems in trying to get my website up and running. Although I have only used for a short time I am very happy with it. I am actually considering closing my website down in favour of just using photobucket and using the money I save for modeling.
Wayne I enjoy getting older, especially when I consider the alternative.

I agree with all the respondents above. I was using Fotopic but for uploading to this forum Photobucket was easy to set up and use. I'd recommend it to anyone.

I've been using Photobucket for a while and am pleased so far. It is a free host, but does have some bandwidth restrictions. If you are going to upload a lot of pics & post them to multiple sites it would probably be a good idea to send them the "Donation" asked for. For $10.00 or so a year you can avoid the restrictions. Also there is a maximum file size limitation of 250kb. If you try to upload a larger file, their software will automatically resize and a significant loss of pic quality will occur. For that reason, most serious amatuer & pro photographers prefer host sites like PBase, even though it is much more expensive. For general purpose web posting of small size pic files, Photobucket is fine, however.

like rick says, i've been using them every since i started posting photos and its a really good idea to resize your photos before uploading them. i've learned that the hard way. i used to just upload my pics from the digicam to my pc, then crop them, and go to PBuck. and upload them without resizing them. i would resize them there, and then post them. i begin to notice the my photos weren't as clear as viewing them freshly uploaded from the cam, so i begin to experiment and found that resizing them before uploading them to photobucket results in much clearer pics, it don't take as long to upload them, and picture quality doesn't suffer if you do want to downsize using photobucket options. i post at scalehobby as well, and they will scold you if your pics are too large, so i usually post mine at 640 to 750 pixels wide max. later.

Chris is refering to a viewing size, where 640x 480 pixels is considered the standard for web pics. What I was refering to is the actual file size. With todays 5,6 or 8 mp cameras, file size can get quite large if you shoot in JPG Fine or RAW. Some sites, like ARC, have an 80kb limit on file size, which saves bandwidth but requires severe compression unless you are using a 2-3 mp cam. I have a 6 mp cam & shoot in JPG normal for the web. I can get viewing size up to about 800 x 600 pixels & just stay under the 250 kb max on Photobucket.
