Sudden death of an old friend - terrible shock.
Posted by Swanny on Thursday, September 9, 2004 6:34 AM
Day before yesterday everything was just fine, no issues, everything seemed okay but last night, with no warning at all my old friend of many years just passed away quietly. My Dremel was dead! The shock was almost more than I could bear. I didn't know what to do. I just stood there and stared at it dumbfounded. I looked to my wife for consolation but she was hardly sympathetic. She said, "We'll just get you another one." Another One! This one had been through so much with me, the Fw-200 vac build, all the resin dust during the RS.14 build (I knew it should have worn a mask) various wood restoration jobs...this was like a friend, you don’t just buy another one. Hmmm, I wonder if I could get a padded grip…..

isnt there anything that the dremel hospital can do for it ? my deepest condolences swanny.

i have a similar story to tell. my uncle gave me my first rotary tool, a semi antique caso rotary tool. i still have the instructions, i dont know when they were printed, but it says that brush replacement charge is 50cents. id guess that it must have been given to my uncle just after the war. well, it gave me about a month of good service until my mom accidentally turned it on while it was "safed" so the armatures were being energised but the thing wouldent turn. so it was a pile of molten plastic. Sad [:(] it wasnt really mom's fault, i should have unplugged it. i kicked myself.

i sympathise, swanny.

I feel for you. Mine is a 1960's vintage and have been coughing and weezing for the past few years. I have replaced the brushes, but he still has some bad days. When he goes, I'm really going to miss him, he and I built a lot of models, as well as survived many other projects together.

I don't want to build your hopes up, but the same thing happened to me and another friend of mine. I put new brushes in it and it was fine. I then did an overall, new bearings and contacts and the like. In the end, it was probabbly better to go and buy a new one, but I was attached as well. Worth a try I suppose.

My condolences, Swanny. I know your feeling, I lost mine many years ago.

FYI, if you can get it fixed do so. The newer ones (I don't really know when they changed) have nowhere near as much torque as the old ones. I've got one now I've had about 10 years and there is no comparison between it and the original I bought back in the early 80's.

You are right, I must move on. So I went to the store, blew my current modeling budget and got a new Dremel. Took it home and the freaking motor pulsates! Back to the store and get it replaced and am finally back in business. I have started cutting plastic for a 1/48 Do-217M conversion but the cost of this burn out was that I had just finished negotiating a deal to clean out a custom casters entire remaining 1/48 stock of resin in the UK and now have to put that on hold for two weeks - what a bummer.

Sounds like a heart-falieure to me, have you tried electro-shocks ?

No, I think tedium could be right here, once the brushes are gone, the coil doesn't get electricity anymore.
But since you already got a new one, this post is a little to late now Smile [:)]
