APB: Vought Kingfisher
Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, September 15, 2004 9:39 AM
Banged Head [banghead]does anybody know of a place to get a 1/48 Vought Kingfisher. I first discoverd this unique aircraft on E-bay. It appears Monogram is the only manufacturer of this kit. I refuse to buy off E-bay ( bad experience), and I have not been able to locate on the 12 normal hobby sites I frequent. Any Ideas???

It's been OOP for quite a while. If eBay isn't an option, you could contact some of the rare kit sellers that advertize in FSM, or wait until Revell/Monogram decide to reissue.

I also have been looking for that same model... picked two of them up off ebay... unless you are totally against ebay I can give you the names of both guys I dealt with (both were hobby shops) and at least one of them had multiple copies of the kit... they were both straight dealers and the model was shipped the next day, at least one accepted check or money order.... so there is no online transaction.

the monogram high tech comes with PE too... but I recommend getting AM decals as the set that comes with the kit is a little sparse, and mine was a little yellowed and kinda has me worried about dry rot etc... so I am waiting on mine....

Airfix and MPC also made 1/72 Kingfishers, but they're tough to find also. I think Airfix bought the MPC mold and re-boxed it.

Paul

Actually the MPC kits were produced in England by Airfix and the boxes, instruction sheets and decals were produced in the States.

I just got one of the 1/72 MPC kits off ebay and wasn't real impressed.... of course it was an older kit so I didn't expect much... raised panel lines and some of it didn't seem quite scale. all in all it wasn't bad I guess... just lacking.

the 1/48 Monogram kit has a lot of detail, with the exception of raised panel lines... comes with PE for a lot of the interior/exterior... pretty nice all in all... of course being OOP ebay or some obscure model shop with older kits would be the only place to get one...

The Prava kit might be the best bet if you wanna step down to 1/72 scale. It also comes with resin parts and if I am not mistaken some PE. I wish I wouldn't have started on the MPC kit before I decided to buy the Monogram High Tech kit, otherwise I would have given it to ya free Borg... it's not ebay and it has some of the niceties that we expect now from the newer kits...

Aftermarket, could you give me the contacts you've dealt with, it's not that I've had a bad experience on e-bay, it's just tough to find a reputable dealer that will take money order or check. And thanks for the look-out on squadron.com for the smaller scale. I've never done anything in 1/72 aircraft, so I'm a little leary about those little planes.

Last time I looked, Scale Model Supplies in St. Paul MN had at least one or two of the late sixties issues of this kit. Maybe Revell/Monogram will read this thread, reissue the kit with the PE, and maybe a Bert Kinzie book "USN Seaplanes and Amphibians" :) Hey, whoever thought they would re-release the Devastator?

here's the guy I bought the 1/48 Monogram kit from... no hasles, took about 4 days to get whipped after I payed bit hey.... it got here! 69bigd, just search by his name on ebay then browse his auctions...

the other guy is bighornhobbies... VERY fast shipping... no probs whatsoever...

tell ya what... I just browsed out and found this guy... he has 99.8% positivie feedback.,.. that's pretty good! auction has 1 day 21 hours to go as of 9:45 Central time... he takes money orders and personal checks too.. All I can tell you is judging from his selling history I would buy from him... his name is thuddriver

the auction item is at:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=1189&item=5922517683&rd=1

check that one out.. it looks like a keeper to me!!!

word to the wise... the PE that comes with the set is good.. but the float holds I havent been able to verify on real life photos so I left them off on mine.... check out my build in Group Builds "Old guns 30 and older" topic...

good luck!!! and althogh the kit has some frustrating points to it... it looks good as you get near finishing!!!!
