How much scratch do you do when you get a kit so that you can get the looks that you want.Or do you build straight out of the box.Do you also scratch build any missing parts or just order them.I find that I build my skills up when I scratch build and brings more enjoiment to my building.Digger

Most of my scratchbuilding depends on time constraints.

I research both the topic I plan to build, and the kit manufacturers, and choose the one with the best and most accurate detail.
Sometimes the detail outways correct fitting of parts, but thats what strip styrene is for!

Mind you, you cant beat aftermarket resin details.

I do a lot of scratchbuilding, mostly for other people. Designing patterns can be fun and above all challenging, but it's also tiring mentally, I find. Therefore, I do enjoy the occasional 'easy' straight from the box build, although I rarely manages to leaves things 'alone' and often, well, always, manage to replace a handle, add a detail or two, correct the shape of something...

I have started doing more an more scratch stuff. IFor me it is fun to look around and find things that can be turned into something I need. As far as how far will I go to get something how I want it, I recently took a 40 Ford truck cab and then built a fire truck around it to have a replica of one we have.

i occasionally scratchbuild a handle or a small part that i think lacks detail, i dont usually worry about accuracy, more on "that looks right"

I like to do a lot of kit bashing and scratchbuilding, especially with ships since these are so limited on the kits on the market. I think the current aftermarket stuff is too much for me so I make my own. However, that can become pretty overwhelming, so then I just grab a kit, opent the box, and build it OOB and have a lot of fun.
