I always get strange looks when I go to the local Chemist store and ask for 3ml syringes for resin casting.......they ALWAYS ask what I'm going to do with them.
I always take a little mold and a casting from the mold, then they're all smiles.

Cheers, LeeTree

Normal would mean you were cutting her underwear up for paint strainers, wierd would be that you wear them while building models.Propeller [8-]

Okay, I can't think of anything wierd I've done myself lately but the comments of wierd stares from store clerks reminded me of a comment made by a sculptor that I had worked with a few years ago. This guy made his own plasticine out of motor oil and vasciline and who knows what else but one day wal-mart had a sale on vasciline so he went in and bought a whole case of it (he was working on a very large sculpture). On his way to the check out he just happened to pass the aisle with rubber gloves so he picked up a box of those too.

Can you imagine what must have been going through the poor check out clerks mind when she sees a middle aged guy with a case of vasciline and rubber gloves? Shock [:O]Shock [:O]Shock [:O]

My dentist as well thinks I'm little strange. I tend to get this envious look when seeing all his drills, files, picks and other tools a modeler can't live without. The latest is the UV drying expoxy resin applicator he uses for temperary fillings. Man would I could do with that tool.

My brother in law is a dentist and I have my eye on the same tool you are talking about... but I want the white light hardener to go with it... I could scratchbuild anything with that! I didn't think about hypodermics.. gonna hit him up for some next time I get a cleaning...

If he ever left me for 10 minutes alone in that place I could strip it bare!!!

Wow, the ideas you get inthe strangest places! What do you guys use hypos for? I would imagine for precision paint mixing or gluing. Give me some tips. I've got a couple of boxes full of hypos left over from some special rx's I was on a couple of years ago and have been trying to come up with uses for them.

Being a ship modeler, I can relate to being a male and being seen, alone, in female dominated beauty supply shops and the sewing departments. This fetish started in highschool. I still remember the crazy look I got from my friends sister, who happened to work at one of these stores, then I went up to the counter with an acrylic nails kit (for the tools and acrylic powder), emery boards, nail hardener, cuticle sissors, and a bunch of other goodies the typical 17 yr. old male shouldn't be seen buying.

It got worse, I began getting calls from her friends asking if I did manicures.Yuck [yuck]

I need to get a pic of me masking a resin kit, for this I wear an old T-shirt and stick the masking tape to it for a few minutes to reduce the tackiness.

Of course doing the mold line removal on a resin kit wearing goggles and respirators while encased in a cloud of resin dust coming of the router should also scare most novice modelers into quitting the hobby.

As for tools I think the Inquisition would make me an honorary member after seeing my tool chest.
Sculpting tool sets x2
Diamond files
Clamps
Wireloops for sculpting
etc.

My mother-in-law, who gives herself daily insulin injections, thought I had acquired a drug habit when I asked her to save her hypodermics for me.

Hey, I make it my priority to search out weird and esoteric subjects for modeling. The weirder it is, the wider my wallet can open for it. :-)

The weirder side of modeling.
Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, October 13, 2004 12:06 AM
In the years that I have been modeling I have done a few weird things like the following:

The Kit is an Imai 1/48 Mospeada Legioss that was just stripped of the chrome plating, rinsed and hung out to dry.(Kit was fully plated)

Abybody else got something to add to the weirder side of modeling?
