i am building a 3 phase model of a river for a school project, was wondering what kind of waterproof sealant i should use. is future waterproof ? how durable is it ? how about white glue ? any other waterproofing agents that are cheap and dry clear ?

thanks

reggie,

It's been a while since I helped on a project like this, but I assume you are going to start by building a wooden box to contain your project. I'm not sure how Future would react to long term contact with water. I do know that other brands of floor polish tend to get soft and eventually dissolve if continuously submerged in water. If you think about it , most floor waxes or polishes are applied over surfaces which are already waterproof (linoleom, plastics, or varnished wood.

Having said that, I would build my container out of plywood, cutting, fitting and sanding the surfaces until I was satisfied. Then, I would paint all the surfaces with spar varnish (which is definately waterproof), making sure all the surfaces get a minimum of 2 full coats (dry between) and probably 3 to 4 coats. When dry, I would assemble the box, using good quality carpenters glue and nails or screws (which I would use). Wipe any excess glue from the joints and let it dry. Then give the interior a couple more coats of spar varnish. The box should now be water and leak proof although if you really want to be sure, apply a layer of silicon seal to the joints, smoothing and fairing it in with your finger.

I believe I read in one of the threads that you frequented an Ace Hardware store. They should have the spar varnish, carpenters glue and silicon seal. (BTW, Elmers Carpenters Glue - the yellow stuff, not the white - is waterproof when dry)

No matter how you go about it, good luck on your project

actually, my little project is much more slap-up [:P} im doing most of the terraforming with powderfiller mixed with white glue. i ask if future is waterproof cos i plan to just paint the future on and for the demo i just pour water through it. im not going to be constantly submerging the model in water.

im not really willing to invest in another product, so i have a bottle of future and id like to use that if it will get by. not that i dont take pride in my work, but most other groups are using plasticine, just to give you an idea of what the standards of finishing are expected.
