call it stealing...

I think passing around ideas and ways is part of the fun of the hobby. If I was to run across something I came up with on a model and saw it on someone elses, I would feel a bit honored that they thought high enough of it to try it themselves.

In Literature, writers, poets, etc. pass through a stage called the stage of "IMITATION" which is a process where writers, poets, etc. try to pattern their works on the works of others that have been previously published and recognized. This is a crucial step in enabling the writers, poets, etc. to learn and develop their own styles.

I guess it will be the same in visual and fine arts as well as in this hobby. It is just part of the learning process, I guess.

Admittingly I start out trying to copy a camoflauge scheme only to mess it up or have to ad-lib a bit of it. When it comes to painting cammo, I generally have painters block, if there were such a term.

Seeing other people's work and reading articles in mags is the main reason why I have so many half-built kits..! Temptation, lack of patience and short attention span can do that to you! LOL

na.......it's flattery as in what imitation becomes........
everything i know or have learned in the hobby either comes from a mistake i've made or someone else's efforts who came before me......

Stealing? I'd call it inspiration.

if it were stealing I would have a rap sheet a mile long Like was said earlier, I like an idea, I try to build it into my kit but usually along the way make it "mine" somehow.. add my own touch to it...

What we produce would be considered intellectual properties, in the same way computer code or a novel is an intellectual property. The difference is that it is very rare that any of our work is copyrighted. Copyright for photos of our work MAY become the property of a magazine or website if it is published there, but only that one photo. Legally, you could copy the paint/assembly of someone's model and have no need to give accredidation unless there were clear indications the original work was formally copyrighted.
If you were to sculpt or otherwise produce an exact replica of a person's copyrighted photo, painting, custom car, or even logo without permission and attempt to make a profit from it, you'd be stealing.

i would say that gaining inspiration from others is one of the ways we learn. and i believe i am very guilty of this form of stealing.

I cut my teeth on Shep Paines work. I remember buying those Monogram kits, and digging the diorama how to pamphlet out of them. I would try to build my stuff just like his. Of course, I was young, but It helped me to develop some series modeling skills. I personaly dont think that there is anything wrong with it. Having someone think highly enough of my work to copy it would kinda put me on the same lines as my idol Mr. Paine. That would be pretty cool!

I don't think I would call it stealing.We try to imitate things that we like,people in there thoughts and ideals have always done this.So come out with different ideals once in a while that we like.Stealing is when you take that thought or ideal and claim it as your own without any reconiction to the one who gave it.As for me I imitate a lot on what I see in books but this imitation have my personail look to it.In that it was done as I saw it with a little more added on to give it my personail touch.This shows that I reconize the origianal but at the same time I personailize it to suit me and my peranalily.Digger
