Acceptable builds in a year?
Posted by tigerman on Monday, October 25, 2004 11:05 PM
Sure everyone's different and we all come from different skill levels, but what would be an obtainable build goal for you in one calendar year? For me, I had hoped to finish one every 2 months. Had I focused harder, I probably could have done it. So far, I have two on the shelf, with another to be completed within the month. Realistically, I'd say 4-6 kits per year would be a good number. One has to figure in research, build time, honey do-lists, family time, work and so on. What is yours?

For me it tends to really vary a lot, since I build Kits from a variety of genres and materials.
Also 99% of my Kits are OOB with maybe a few replacement parts like fuel lines, etc.
At times there are phases where I will finish 1 1/12 Motorbike kit a week(Roadbikes).

Said that if I build for a competition it is not uncommon for me to spend 6~9 months on a kit, with other builds on the side.

I suspect it will vary greatly from year to year, but 10 kits is a good round number.

I am basically an OOB builder (and building for myself). So far this year I have done 7 kits (3 of them included in a diorama) so I guess 8 kits would be realistic for me. (Of course this is considering that I am nearing the completion of another one on the bench.)

10 kits in a year Laugh [(-D]Laugh [(-D]Laugh [(-D] I could probably manage to buy 10 a year but that's about it. At the glacial pace that I build I would be lucky to push out 3-4.

After just about 5 years devoted to building patterns for various customers, with an average of just under 50 of those per year, and only a single or at most a couple of builds for my own pleasure, things are definitely looking up. I mostly build small scale stuff and that often (not always) mean fast turnaround. Realisticaly though, even with less 'external' committments, but with the family and the jobs, and a large number of builds on the go at any time, I can hopefuly stay at an average of 2 completed kits per month.

This has been a good year. With a new shop, I ended up with three already done and maybe two more by year end. Then again, I had surgury at the end of last year and had a lot of "build" time over the first four months of 2004.

Wow. You guys build quickly. I'm happy with 2-3 a year. I've got a lot going on that gets in the way of building models, but I also seem to work on kits that require more work than average. That, and I just work slowly.

2004 has been a VERY slow modelling year for me: only one done so far, and that one was finished way back in February! I probably bought about 20 or so, though...
I did do some translations for Armour Modelling magazine and Panzer Works (a local resin kit maker), so I'm still very involved in the hobby...then of course there are the forums!
Optimum situation: I'd like to build four or five models a year.

Being a new father, and the little one just clocking his first orbit of the Sun, this year has gone a bit squiggly.

Completed 3 to date, and hopefully will have finished another 2 by years end.

I rarely build OOB, accuracy reasons mostly, but I also prefer to be a bit of a perfectionist, so that slows build time alot.

Also spending 60 hour weeks at work building custom car audio installs, the last thing I want to do at home is glue MORE stuff.

I normally build at least 20 models a year, but 2004 was slow because of some health problems. So far, I've only finished 9, & have 4 in progress that I should complete before years end. Might squeeze in a couple more if I get off my duff.

So far this year I've done about 7 or 8 kits (I think). Then theres the 3 that I've got going at the moment. So, on average, I'd probably finish about ten a year.

Last year I built 12 kits. So far this year I have built 6 kits. I think the reason for my slowdown is that I have been spending more time playing a few computer games and spending more time just hanging out with friends. I do have a couple of kits unfinished and plan on starting the Tamiya Pershing this week, so I may hit 10 kits finished. That's a number I can live with.

I usually build 20-25 a year. I try to keep an average of four kits going at any one time. There's always something to do while the paint or glue is drying on a kit !

I average 6 builds per year. Normally 3-4 oob and 2-3 super detailed projects. My building pace is much slower compared to when I was a teenager, of course the quality is much better now.

This is my first full year back in the hobby and I have completed 5 models and I have 3 more on the go. I hope to have 1 of those finished by year end and I need to get some parts for another so I can finish that one off aswell as for the last , that is a labour of live and will not be finished for a few months yet.

If I had the time, I could do with finishing one every month. However, now I find it difficult to even go with one every two months. I'd say 4-6 models per year is fair.

I think I have too many deadlines and quotas at work and life to put one on myself for my hobby. So I would say 0 would be a nice number and anything over that will be a bonus. Big Smile [:D]

If it weren't for quality and accuracy, I'd think the majority of us would have a houseful of built kits by now. I know I would.

With a new year approaching rapidly I've only put out about 4or5 kits this year. It would have been more but with a new computer, and no computer skills, I've spent alot of time learning how to turn this thing on and off! The new year will most likely see even less production. I'm starting the move into more after market additions for my kits so there will be a learning curve and the added expense will also mean buying less kits and focusing on making the most with what I have.
