AMT/ERTL MODELS

I can only speak to their aircraft kits, which are only fair in quality. They no longer produce aircraft kits, but the company was sorta reborn under the AMTECH name. AMTECH released a couple of kits based on updating old tooling that weren't bad. More have been promised, but are long overdue. You may also find some of the old AMT/ERTL kits reboxed by companies such as Italeri.

I learned early in modeling that AMT is crap. Their models are largely junk and their customer service is worse if you've got a problem even as simple as needing replacement parts.

The only kit I ever built that had their label on it that I liked was a 1/72 Fokker F-27 airliner and that wasn't even their kit, just a reissue of an older Esci kit.

I was overjoyed when AMT lost the Star Trek kit license and Monogram made the kits for the "Voyager" series and now Polar Lights are doing the "Enterprise" series of kits as well as some throw backs to the original series.

I could never get an AMT Star Trek kit to go together, but I've got Polar Lights' original series Enterprise waiting for me back home in Canada to start.

If you haven't guessed by now, I say give AMT a miss.

My experience with AMT/ERTL had been pretty good. With the Trek kits, I once asked for a missing piece from one starship kit and the sent a whole new kit! A previous time I asked for a replacement part and decals and I got them no problem bu this was a few years ago.

I have a 1/48 A-20 Havoc and a 1/48 Tigercat and both kits are pretty good. The impression I get is it depends on which series of kits you are choosing from because the kit's sources were different.

I just started working on a DS9 Runabout model from AMC/ERTL and everything has gone great so far with no problems.

I have a partially completed 1/72 scale EF-111 that is painfully lacking in any detail. It has a little bit of a warping problem and it looks like mating the nose/cockpit to the body might be alittle dicey.

I'm with Upnorth on this one. I bought all their Star Trek kits simply because they were the only game in town, but with the exception of the Runabout, they were disappointments. I'd steer clear them of them.

I also discovered another AMT kit I had, a BMP 2 that while utterly devoid of interior detail (see my post re: EF-111), has a remarkable amount of exterior detail given what I paid for it.
